Measuring AC and DC Voltages

Learn more about how to measure voltage with an oscilloscope! Last time we looked at the question "what is voltage?" and looked at a 9V battery, this week we add in an AC voltage source and look at the resulting waveform. Also, find out what happens when you disconnect your oscilloscope probe's ground pin.

Tune in for the next episode which discusses the basics of voltage part 2 and future 2-Minute Guru episodes discussing filters, Ohm's law, and more electrical engineering and electronics basics!

The digital storage oscilloscope we used:
(The Keysight InfiniiVision 1000 X-Series Oscilloscope)

This is an awesome cheap oscilloscope for beginners! Need a little more from your oscillosocpe? I recommend the InfiniiVision 2000 X-Series or 3000T X-Series oscilloscopes.
Both of them have a built in digital multimeter, function generator (WaveGen), and more!

Keysight's Daniel Bogdanoff teaches the basics of electrical potential in this week's episode of The 2-Minute Guru.

The 2-Minute Guru is dedicated to teaching the basics of electrical engineering concepts and equipment.

Tune in for next episode when I'll look at Ohm's Law! Also, let me know in the comments if there's anything you want me to cover in future episodes.

The last statement: "regardless of outside influences, the scope is only going to measure the difference between the ground clip and the probe pin"... worth pointing out that on any mains powered DUT the ground clip of a passive probe HAS to be at mains earth potential, so is best connected to chassis ground. You can't just place the probe ground on one side of a component and the probe tip on the other side, as you would with a DMM.

You short the function generator output to ground. Is the output short circuit proof?

Connecting the ground of the probe to the output of the signal generator will short it out. Keysight, could you please update or pull the video? It should be instructive, not destructive. Or maybe he wants to be like Medhi. @ElectroBOOMGuy @keysight @DanielBogdanoff

you just shorted the output of the wave generator

I downloaded the free key to add a multimeter functions to my 1000x... should I see a new window or a dmm key. Is there a white paper on this? Also found the custom screensaver function (cool)

Hello I have keysight edux1002a, When I measure a lithium ion battery pack voltage it shows 60.4v but fluke shows 58.2v, what could be the problem?

Is my model inaccurate in measuring high voltages?

The book is not available on the link i the description

Warning: You need a differential probe for this (or use two probes and let the scope subtract the signals)... using the method in the video can blow up your gear

It'll help if you actually show your connection changes, rather than the 3 kilos of hair gel ;)
