The Hoverfly An Overlooked Pollinator

The importance of hoverflies in Nature is often under-estimated. It might be due to the word “fly” attached to it. Flies, to most, are just pesky insects.
But hoverflies are important pollinators. They may not be as great pollinators as the bees or the butterflies, but the role of hoverflies in pollination should not be overlooked.
Their larvae are good garden helpers, too. Like the ladybird (or the lady beetles), the larvae of the hoverflies feed on aphids, thrips, scale insects, mites and more garden pests.
After emerging from the larvae stage, hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen AND also feed on plant pests like whiteflies and mealybugs.
Indeed, hoverflies are amazing insects that help contribute to the natural balance in the garden.
By “balance”, this is because hoverflies also serve as “meals” to birds. It may be sad, hoverflies being eaten, but this is how Nature nurtures all living creatures on Earth.
