The Advent hymn "Conditor alme siderum", set to music by Michael Praetorius 🎶, sung by the Durham Cathedral Choir directed by the Master of the Choristers and Organist Daniel Cook 🎵.

Durham Cathedral marks the start of Advent with a special service featuring music from Durham Cathedral Choir, and readings and prayers from cathedral clergy and the Bishop of Durham. Through music, poetry and scripture, we hear revealed the mystery of God’s loving purpose for us.
During the service the choir moves from west to east, from ‘darkness to light’. First, in near-darkness, the ancient responsory sets out the Advent hope. Shortly after comes the ancient hymn Conditor alme siderum. Then, carols of our redemption alternate with Advent hymns and readings, looking not only toward our celebration of the birth of Jesus, but also of that time when he returns in glory culminating in our prayer ‘Amen: come, Lord Jesus.’

TEXT
Creator of the stars of night, Thy people’s everlasting light,
O Jesu, Saviour of us all, Regard thy servants when they call.

Thou, grieving at the bitter cry, Of all creation doomed to die,
Didst come to save a ruined race, With healing gifts of heavenly grace.

Thou camest, Bridegroom of the bride, As drew the world to evening-tide,
Proceeding from a virgin shrine, The Son of Man, yet Lord divine.

At thy great name, exalted now, All knees must bend, all hearts must bow,
And things in heaven and earth shall own, That thou art Lord and King alone.

To thee, O holy One, we pray, Our judge in that tremendous day,
Preserve us, while we dwell below, From every onslaught of the foe.

All praise, eternal Son, to thee, Whose advent sets thy people free,
Whom with the Father we adore, And Spirit blest, for evermore. Amen.

Dear Durham Cathedral Choir, Mr Cook. It is a wonderful service and lovely to hear both boys and girls together. They sing so well. Where I work they insist to divide boys and girls in different choirs. I wonder about Conditor alme siderum, how can I buy the sheetmusic? I have found the Praetorius version and the original tune but it is not the same melody that you sing I think. Yours kindly, Catarina.

Beautiful rendition, but the way it’s labeled is confusing. The words are the English translation of Conditor alme siderum (Creator of the Stars of Night) but the TUNE being used is PUER NOBIS, not the plainsong tune which is called “Condtor alme siderum.”

Pity the distinctive sound of trebles is now diluted away in the name of woke. This was not music written for 'children's voices.
