Tonight we have a very special guest. Yanis Varoufakis is an ex Greek minister of finance, an economist and politician. In February 2016 he launched the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) and he also took a great part in founding the Progressive International alongside many progressive politicians, economists and activists. The Progressive International has been described as a „common blueprint for an International New Deal, a progressive New Bretton Woods“.
We will talk to Yanis about the state and direction of our world, how we can influence things for the better and what we should be striving for. Tune in at 17:00 GMT on Samstöðin

Visited Iceland in February, great people and beautiful country. That combined with this video makes me think - the rest of the world needs to hear more from Iceland! Great video. Subscribing in case you do more in English and follow your progress. In solidarity from the UK ✊

Go, go, young red Iceland! You are so charmingly clever! Xx
And my special appreciation to Yanis - one of the greatest thinkers of our times and my DiEM25 comrade without whose knowledge and vision I wouldn't be able to navigate the world in these complex and challenging times.

This stream reminded me of the Gramsci quote "Optimism of intellect, pessimism of will." Was losing hope in my local DSA chapter and am a Diem25 member, but having read a number of Varoufakis' books and being cynical before watching, this conversation brought some of that optimism needed to continue the struggle.

Doing things is expertise.
Asking is magic to the experts.
Speak and you create an avenue of action.
Observation is the butler of power to your word.

Maybe producing hyper-casual games that, in one way or another, transmit some of these messages to the masses is one way to proceed. They need to be designed very intelligently. Very nice discussion, thank you from Turkey!!!

What the LEFT should do is to create asap a mass media, TV (e.g. Workers of the World) to compete with BBC, CNN, etc
Also a Radio to compete with Voice of America, etc
That is a MUST
Having people like Yanis, C Hedges, Noam, Abby, John Pilger, Arundhati Roy, Vijay Prashad, Max Blumental, Peter Joseph, Lee Camp, Eleonor Goldfield and many, many others around the world
The LEFT also should have annual meetings like Davos, to brainstorm ideas

Dear Icelanders, strive to maintain the social and democratic integrity of your country and continue to set an example for the rest of us. The world shall follow your lead eventually, even if it is post-apocalypse.

In the context of people having no time to engage in such discussions. How do we get ignorant middle class in Western countries to engage and help makes change? ... I refer to those people who live well, do have the time to engage, but live, rely on and propagate the myths of capitalism, because for them, life is not too bad?

The extermination of social democracy by finance capital is why those fighting to preserve or gain social democracy must be willing to defend and fall back on more radical and revolutionary models, like Peoples Korea, Cuba, Libya, Venezuela, etc.

Good luck in Iceland. Look after yourselves and your land and you'll be ok. If you can survive and even enjoy Icelandic weather, you can survive global hyper-capitalism. Just make sure you keep none of your money overseas in case the US freezes it!

No, of course turbines are not damagable to the environment! How do you install it? How much and what kind of materials do you need to create and install one? Where are those materials come from? Lastly, how long the turbine lasts? 15 years? What do you do with it after it's gone? I have seen them scattered and abandoned and rotting! Terrible view, not only a damage to the environment! Green transition didn't work in Texas when it was needed the most and left people warming up their homes by car engines! Terrible idea!
