I hope you see this comment even though this is a very old video. I have been binge watching your videos this morning and feel like they have provided a great amount of knowledge I cant thank you enough for. 1 hour of watching your condensed videos saved me weeks of actually reading through these books but I still picked up the same message

1. Schedule and restrict distractions
2. Make it a habit - Schedule it in (1hrs)
3. Daily shutdown ritual - Schedule next day

I used a method of studying similar to this. I'd go to the library on a Saturday for three 2-hour study sessions. A total of six hours. I first sit in the lobby for 5 minutes and think about what I'm going to achieve in the next two hours. Then I'd go in ready to go. No distractions like at home. After two hours I'd leave for a 20 minute walk or lunch. I'd come back and repeat the process.

Works really well if you have a friend doing it too. You can discuss in the lobby what you are going to get done. (Don't sit next to each other when you go into the library and hit the bathroom first!) Even if you are not studying the same subjects it works really well at keeping each other accountable.

I find I can't do more than 6 hours. 8 is too much.

Before the existence of the internet, "deep work" used to be known as "work"

I remember being back at uni in the 90s, everything was deep work back then. It's a shame now how we've built a society technology-fuelled distraction around us.

Wonderful Work! One simply cannot go wrong by investing 10 - 15 minutes daily with this kind of learning. Fantastic video book review. Splendid example of "clarity and brevity".
THNAK YOU!

I was a highschool students attended a boarding school. It had such a rigid schedule to follow all the time. At first, I hated it but now it becomes my life. I have read the book and it really reflects my life then. Trust me you will gain much out of your time and life when you schedule your day and do deep work.

I love this book. People really need to understand how to get back to deep work. That is what my generation was raised on. I still live by those skills but my generation is getting older.

Basically single minded focus basic stuff. Deep work is a rewording of basic concepts and adding new examples. Anyone who grew up without the internet know this instinctively.

Thanks for helping me feel like I'm not alone with my challenge to focus. Been trying to get it all together to apply for a specific job and its been weeks or maybe even months now that I've been preparing. Lucky for me, they need a lot of people and keep re-posting the job. You two are BRILLIANT and Fun!

Thanks for the video, I tried reading the book but found it very waffly and long in the first section. It seemed Newport was repeating the same information about how amazing deepwork was over and over. Watching the video really helped me understand the book in a fraction of the time

Great summary. I haven't read this book yet. I really enjoy reading books about focus and organization. We have so many stimulis these days and being focused and productive becomes a challenge. Apparently this book is amazing and I've added it to my shopping list.

Great summary, many thanks - deep work is enjoyable! - my tips for what it's worth: The deep task is 'setup' and the first task of the day, known the night before so I can "sleep on it"; cardio or some type of vigorous exercise followed by stretching relaxes me down into the deep zone; no emails and boundaries are drawn clearly with co-workers, phones are out of view; tea vs coffee; I repeat certain music daily, and it triggers the same modality and type of thinking; I use warm-up tasks to ease into deep tasks; Outcomes are clear, if I can't 'see' where I'm going, I won't achieve anything; I try to avoid stimulants later in the day, shallow sleep prevents me having gas in the tank to do deep work. The adenosine / caffeine relationship is very true for my body - I may not be able to sleep but in that state I can do no meaningful work either
