I totally gave up all plans to export *anything* from New Zealand because of the outrageous cost of shipping and even postage. Anything other than a letter needs to be sent with track & trace these days and since the postal system deleted the concept of "registered airmail" and replaced it with "international courier" then I can't really send anything outside this country for less than about $60 and even a small package is likely to cost $100+ to ship. This totally kills the "cottage industry" exporting concept 😞

There's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution.

Our trash service added a extra charge for gasoline when the gas prices went up. Then the prices went down and the fee wasn't removed. Then it was removed, but the base price was raised to the previous total.

Send this to a local news outlet, that’s the only way to start putting pressure on them to stop this BS practice.

Greedy companies be greedy. Who would've thought? :/
They did the same over here and got their asses handed to them by one of our government bodies.

As I understand it these surcharges went in place because passenger flights pretty much stopped. The shipping companies put a lot of their cargo on passenger flights. With that option gone they had to lease freighters, etc. That's not the case any more.

Just my own experience, but I have primarily had bad experiences with DHL over multiple states in the US. I now refuse to order from merchants if they only use their service.

If you purchase plane tickets in America, the carrier adds a "9/11 Security Fee".

The classic "we need to make more money but won't make as many sales if we just advertise a higher price" surcharge.

The "emergency" is "we want money"

nothing is more permanent than a temporary surcharge unless it is a temporary tax...
Dutch government added a "temporary" 10 cent tax onto the petrol taxes 25 years ago, was "promised" to "only be for a few years", and have since refused any call to stop charging it.
Try to book an airline ticket. You're paying 50 Euro for the ticket plus 500 Euro for the "fuel surcharge", "security surcharge", and all the other "temporary surcharges" due to "fluctuating prices", "fluctuations" that could have been rolled into the ticket price decades ago but haven't been because doing it like this allows them to advertise dirt cheap ticket prices while you're actually paying far more (and no doubt DHL and co are doing it for the exact same reason).

I guess the emergency is that they've got their hand stuck in your pocket like a trapped monkey's paw in a jar.

Yellow Freight tried some pretty crappy stuff too: In the early 2000s a friend ordered five Mercury engines and the deal was Mercury would pay shipping for bulk orders. Then one day Yellow shows up with the engines and demands several hundred dollars before they'll unload them. The Yellow phone rep. actually had the nerve to say that their new policy was to _always_ bill whatever will cost the most no matter what. Of course Mercury had something to say about it and it was resolved – _but seriously!_

Yellow recently went out of business, and _good riddance._ Maybe there's something evil about the color yellow. I'll wait for my trip to Australia to buy one of your multimeters.

Anyway, hen CEOs openly boast on investor calls that they can jack up prices as much as they want because "people are used to price increases" you know we're effed.

I like that if you are shipping from Australia you have a very specific and detailed shipping add on charges section. If, however, I in the US ship something to Australia ***scans down the column*** huh, I guess you get lumped in with "Rest of World" in that case, because you aren't important enough to exist as a unique entity far as my shipping add on prices are concerned, lol. Did you hurt DHL's feelings or something?

If I recall correctly, the federal income tax in the US was just a thing to build the war chest around WW2. Promised only to be temporary, of course.

DHL slugs me with at least $30 per shipment for "remote area pickup". I live in a city with over 250k people.

I totally gave up on merchandising; shipping costs are far beyond the cost of a goodie.

I agree Dave, time for them to drop this surcharge. I have to say that cost aside, the DHL delivery experience has been really good for me. I like the multimeters you sell, they work very well, and it is also nice to support the blog. Thank you.

Here in Germany the Wine Tax was introduced in 1902 to finance the Kriegsmarine. Guess what we still pay in 2023...
