I assure you as an Australian, that after six months of travel all over the USA, the VAST MAJORITY of Americans can not tell the difference between an Australian accent and a British accent. This does NOT make them stupid. Most Americans are rarely exposed to both (esp Aussie accents) and therefore it's perfectly understandable that they struggle to tell the difference.

If you frequently hear Aussie and British accents it's easy to tell. If you haven't, they can definitely sound similar.

I find it very easy to tell the difference between Australian, British, Scottish, and Irish accents. I guess living in a city such as San Francisco, and it being such a melting pot made it easier to decipher the intonations of the speaker. I love the Australian people. They are very warm and easy to talk to and always interested in what you have to say. I think the cutest thing I heard was a child telling his mom, "Be gum Mum, me bum's numb." and "It looks like you got the rough end of the pineapple." So there you have it. No worries mate.

When that girl said England made me laugh as a Brit. I often got mistaken for being Australian whilst in America

travelling through Europe i met a chic from Maryland and she was surprised to hear i was Australian - despite my accent, she said she thought i was from the midwest - strange...

I put this clip on my university presentation for my sociology unit about “Culture shock in Australia” and I got a high distinction for that presentation.... Thank you Rove!

American accents are just so adorable! the good thing about being Australian, is that when we do want to go full Auzzie... we can, unlike lots of Americans
