The commentating on that official stream is horrendous. They seem to only be there to give amusing anecdotes about previous races and various insights into the athletes minds. When they talk about the race they only talk about the athletes on screen, and on the screen there is never anyone lower than 10th place it seems like. They could be giving insights into how different athletes are moving up and down the field over the course of the 4 hours of cycling. But instead they just keep chatting about other stuff. Ridiculously poor quality.

so I am guessing Ironman will not allow GTN - one of the greatest triathlon promoters using the official footage. Ironman media marketing team staff should be fired altogether.

Thanks for the coverage! GTN is the best and first channel to post a race recap!

Wow wow wow! So happy for Patrick and also I am super happy that the German public broadcaster ZDF broadcasted the entire race without a brake and without (!) ads. Even better Sebastian Kienle was one of the co-commentators and Frodeno sometimes an expert. 🔥

I guess we are going back to the German method 😂

Wurf and Marquedt are the highlights for me this kona. Wurf showing how to perform at age and Marquedt showing that you can be a med student and still compete at the highest level.

Well done James and all the background folks who have led and produced this coverage. It was really enjoyable to follow along.

I think the key lesson to take from this year’s Kona is that experience still matters in long distance triathlon and the old guard is not ready to give up to the young guns. Patrick demonstrated his race craft and experience to take the win from Sam, who implemented a very brave strategy that actually did succeed in dealing damage to many of the other pre-race favorites. I think Sam chose to race this way based on his own strengths, so I have to respect that from him. It’s hard to tell how much he overcooked the bike because your performance can drop off a cliff if you are even just barely over the limit. Still, he showed the heart of a champion and respect for the race by finishing as best he could.

Overall, a really entertaining race. I don’t understand why people are dragging the commentary so much though. It’s a 7+ hour event and they are really just focused on the lead of the race. If you want them to have coverage all throughout, they would need to have more motos on course and I think we know how people feel about having more motos on the bike course.

“He said we shouldn’t expect much from him, and he was right!”, OUCH! 😂😂😂😂
Hope I never have James commenting on a race I do I can imagine his comment about me “and without doubt the slowest athlete was the lard arse who looked like a mobile lava lamp on the run….”.

Thanks for the recap, GTN! Ironman's race coverage was unwatchable for me, as the stream wouldn't work on my computer and I did not want to download the app and watch on my phone. And there isn't a race recap on the Ironman YouTube channel, so GTN was my source!

'tactical chanda' amazing South African phrase, haven't heard it for years as a Saffa in the UK ... perfectly captures the moment

Its safe to say that Laidlows bike attack changed the race dynamics for most of the contenders. I wonder why he biked so hard? Maybe just caught up in the hype? Curious to hear what he has to say. And Lionel of course!
