Some Question Sanders' Line On Race, Poverty | MSNBC

As a black person of previously low-income background, I understood exactly what Bernie was saying, and they are discussing his comment out of context. Of course white people know what it is like to be poor, but white poverty in this country is not concentrated over significant swaths of geography like black poverty. Entire black communities are destitute without access to good education, fresh food, and good jobs. This phenomenon occurs much less rarely in any white community (Appalachia is an extreme example). Bernie's rhetoric tends to be a lot better when he's not debating, and I can understand confusion about that. I also wish he had worded his answer better. However, to denigrate his 50+-year record of supporting African-Americans and fighting for civil rights, economic equality, and fair criminal justice on the basis of him not having enough black friends or living around enough black people is ridiculous. Unlike his democratic opponent, he has never wavered and doesn't have to "apologize" about his past to the black community.

People say the media is too progressive, yet they all seem to hate Bernie Sanders.

I like how they can only have black people talk when it’s about situations including racism

This is clearly not what he meant and MSNBC knows it .

MSNBC, as a woman of colour I disagree with your views. The byte that you choose to fixate on is meaningless to me when I trust Bernie's consistent record of standing up for the little guys. Hillary's politically expedient, ever-changing stance, and her constructed comments by a slew of speech writers and PR folks telling her what to say means that I will never trust a word that comes out of that woman's mouth. Sitting in her high tower I definitely do not see her as someone who understands the genuine plight of minority communities. I see her as a woman who has a single agenda...getting herself into the White House.

What Sanders said proves just what he said, he does not have a clue of what it is like in the ghetto

I'm a big critic of Bernie and a Hillary's supporter, but Bernie didn't say anything bad nor insulting. And it's true that many of our people do live in poverty and something should be done about it. People, please, stop with the race card.

And this is why I don't watch this hot garage anymore. Bernie Sanders was chaining himself to disenfranchised black women in the in the 1960's. Don't believe me, LOOK IT UP! MSNBC, I'm beyond disappointed, I'm sickened.

The fact is poverty, water, fire and fear have few boundaries. The poor are equally represented on both sides and will continue to suffer together.

This is completely false. It is very disturbing that MSNBC would quote Sanders but not finish what he said at the end of the address. He specifically said that many whites are poor and by ghetto he clearly used it in the context of standard of living - not just wealth. It is also very disturbing that a large media company would give statistics such as " about 25% of Americans are poor " Showing that most are not poor. Sanders was not talking about blacks, he was talking about racism in the ghetto. I highly recommend all views to re watch the debate clip. The video is HIGHLY misleading. #BernieBlackOut
