In regards to the boss eq pedal... my Dad had a party with a great 3 piece blues band and of course asked if I could sit in. The guitarist handed me his strat going into a nice old princeton. I looked at his pedalboard and was blown away! 2 boss eq pedals set flat with just a little boost on each. No pedals, kinda clean. One on, driving. Both on, beautiful drive channel sound. I learned a lot that night.

I can't understand why Tim doesn't have 2 or 3 mil subscribers! He's such an awesome melodic player who exudes joy when he's playing and he has the studio creds to back him up. He is so much better than many of the guitar channels out there. Please share his channel and get him to a mil subscribers

It always amazes me how much money guitarists will spend on their gear to shape their tone, stacking pedal upon pedal, yet I rarely see an EQ pedal on their boards.

Here in Brazil is really expensive for someone to buy pedals. Most of us buy digital pedalboards. I've got a Boss GT100 and a Big Muff to give the tone. Because of this video i managed to control to gain, the digital noise and the eq in a way that produced an aamzing rock tone with my old beloved kramer. THANKS MAN! THANKS A LOT! Love U man, love how you explain everything. Make it possible, make it easy.

I always thought it was interesting how Gilmour had a GE-7 in line with each of his gain pedals to shape the tone. This goes back years too...

What an awesome and informative chat here. You should definitely do more collaborations like this, Phil is such a helpful and knowledge gear maestro.

I've been preaching this forever (What you shared towards the end "The gear is for us"). We shouldn't drive ourselves mad with chasing tone because...only the other guitarists in the crowd will REALLY appreciate it. But at the same time, it's still important to feel confident and know that you have your own unique sound. I also believe that our guitars are just as much stage props as they are instruments. It's okay to pine after that cool relic finish, that vintage looking ax, or that beautifully pristine ultra modern guitar. We're not just crafting music, we're also entertainers and it's fun to play into that entertainment aspect along with the music.

I used to take a house stereo EQ, put in 1/4 in jacks in it and run my guitar in one side and my mike thru the other, had a lot of flexibly with it. The poor days! Lol

One of my favorite tones I've been able to get is with all the slides all the way up (including the volume) into a tweed champ barely up above the lowest volume setting. Depending on attach, I can get clear, chimey cleans; wooly, milkshake thick barking aggressive tones, and everything in-between....all with my hands. The Boss Equalizer GE-7 is the best pedal ever! Of course, a tweed champ is the best amp ever.

I love your playing. It is smooth, liquiddy and tone for days
And the occasional shred makes me smile. Thanks Tim

All hail the GE-7! I used it for years in the effects loop as a solo boost.

Phil is such a great dude. His advice is just so honest and his point of view is refreshing. He, just like you Tim, seems to be above fads and popular opinion. Some guys can recommend stuff without the need to read out the "not sponsored" disclaimer every time. Keep up the great work.

All gear aside, I just have to say Tim, you play some of the most tasteful licks on youtube. While I love so many players in this world (and youtube) if I could "download" any ONE talent to my brain, it would be you. Thanks for your contribution to music and guitar. (lol, you're a great contributor too Phil.)

i've used the GE-7 as a live gig lead boost since its release, almost 40yrs ago...it's the 'sound man misses guitar lead cue' eliminator, and is my one absolutely indispensable pedal...if i had to, i could lose all the other pedals--but fight to the end to keep this one...you can tailor your lead tone any way you like, and clean boost it above the mix to boot--best all-round, practical and versatile pedal ever made, IMO

I get tired dialing in the right sound all the time. I can spend hours doing that. It eventually just wears me out.
BTW....I've never seen a guy demonstrating guitar skills with as much joy as this gentleman!

The GE-7 makes a nice boost onto itself, too, whether "boosting" a few frequencies or using the level slider, or both, you can get things bigger and louder, and maybe push your amp into some light overdrive. Or use it for a cut to clean things up.

Shoegaze/Post Rock player with 25 years or so and a ton of gear, and when young heads ask me the "secret sauce, " i always say e.q., and i have never seen a happy face after I tell them that.

Thank you, Tim - great stuff!

I've been playing professionally for a long time, but I'm extremely grateful to have access to the experience and expertise of guys like you, Phil, and Mr. Bukovac. 🙏

Your guest really gets it. It's about acquiring a sound, a tone or a flavor of both. That's really cool and insightful.
