I struggled with backing and trailer swing for a couple of months as a newbie driver until an old hand came up to me and told me to slide my tandems all the way back to eliminate the trailer tail swing. Great tip and will save allot of headaches. It only takes a minute to slide them to save allot of wasted maneuvers.

I believe I was in that place one time

Thank you so much. I have a tight back tomorrow and nervous.

The reason the tandem is all the way up and driver hit the wall because he or she watched the tandem. Driver should look at the bumper of the trailer. When it passes into the hole, keep it as close to the left side of the spot while backing. Sliding tandem is not important as where to look at and keep tracking it.

I beg to differ you should put those tandems all the way up whoever was driving who hit the walls they just couldn't drive anyway it's harder to get in a tight spot when you add more feet and inches to your tractor and trailer The longer it is the harder it is for you to fit it into that tight slot when you're not able to pull forward so no what you're saying sir is very inadequate and I can back that trailer into that spot very easily you have plenty of room to pull forward try doing that with no room to pull up then you'll wish you had your tandems all the way up

at least the hole isnt tight. theres some place where you got inches to spare with the doors opened. really easy to rip a door off

Agreed. Tandem to the rear eliminates trailer swing. Helps you predict where your blindside is.

Tandems forward or to the rear doesn't matter. What matters is knowing where your trailers ass is at all times

You new guys and gals pay close attention here. He is describing the proper way to do it. The cantilever swing can get you into a lot of trouble in these tight situations. Never go down the road like this if you can avoid it, of course. I now drive a non-adjustable split axle, and it is something I have to always be on top of when moving forward, since a right-hand turn almost always requires a button-hook even on 2 lane roads. Backing it is easy though, since the rearmost axle is all the way to the back.

That being said, I have done it both ways, and it can be done, and in certain cases, it has to be done wheels forward because of clearance issues. About 13 years ago I had to back about 120 feet to a 90 degree dock through an apparent obstacle course, but wheels back is safer and easier whenever possible.

I delivered to that same spot with tractor trailer next to me and it was not easy. G.O.A.L

I've backed into alot tight places like this and not once did i move the tandems all the way back..didn't realize it would help and alot of times the tandems don't move on our crappy equipment lol..i just figured the back of the trailer is still the back of the trailer..no matter what

I disagree with the tandems all the way back. You are seriously limiting the maneuverability of the trailer like this. Leave the tandems foward and drive the trailer back. Watching your icc, you can visualize where your blindside is on the opposite corner. Coming from someone who spent 18 years backing in NYC, Jersey, Boston etc. Remember, practice makes perfect. GOAL is never a waste of time.

I concur Ryan tandems to the rear for better control of trailer swing.
