Ingmar Bergman once said of Andrey Tarkovsky, “He moves with such naturalness in the room of dreams,” and the French-German quartet named after the great Russian filmmaker has developed an associative dream-language of its own. For leader and pianist François Couturier the “silence and slowness of Tarkovsky” are closely related to an “ECM aesthetic” further developed on the group’s third album Nuit blanche, produced by Manfred Eicher in Lugano in April 2016. Here pieces variously composed by François Couturier, or created in the moment by Couturier, cellist Anja Lecher, saxophonist Jean-Marc Larché and accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier, explore the texture of dreams and memory and continue to make oblique reference to Tarkovsky. Couturier’s Dakus, for instance, acknowledges a debt to Toru Takemitsu’s 1987 composition Nostalghia, written in memory of the director. The quartet also incorporates a crepuscular interpretation of Vivaldi’s “Cum dederit delectis suis somnum” from the Nisi Dominus, alluding to a composer Tarkovsky was listening to at the time of Stalker. Whether playing improvised chamber music, modern composition or baroque music, the creative originality of the Tarkovsky Quartet shines through.

Le son si mélo de l'accordéon fut repris par feu Népal, artiste français, comme un sample de son titre Babylone. Le mélange était l'ouverture sur un monde pluvieux, sombre et rapide, urbain emprunt d'anonymat et de refus du système, ici c'est plus une lamentation de solitude individuelle, comme une nuit blanche justement que je retrouve ici... Un flux plus éternel et universel de sentiment, moins descriptive et qui s'alimente de nos regrets comme de nos ambitions

Quand je vois ce quartet, quand je l'écoute, j'entends aussi l'horreur par contre coup. La musique est si belle qu'elle renvoie aussitôt à toute l'infamie humaine. La beauté ne va pas sans l'horreur, c'est tout le drame de l'homme. Une musique que Cioran aurait aimé, lui qui disait : " Le monde est un enfer dont chaque instant est un miracle." Cette musique relève du miracle. Le reste participe de l'enfer...

...ausencia de atardeceres...brumas que no cesan...evocaciones de este cuarteto formidable...de instrumentos aparentemente dispares...pero armónicos a la vez...donde resalta la voz cantabile de un saxo-soprano...que canta como un águila volante...!!!

I can hear the spirit of Schubert, very simpe and very complexe at the same time. I find a full spectrum of armonics from joy to melancholic in this melodies. Great Quartet!
