Wu Tong has done much to bring the sheng (Chinese mouth organ) to modern audiences around the world. But now he's reconnecting with its past, exploring a harmonious sound said to bring man closer to nature. (In English, sheng means “birth” or "to give life.")

Here Wu Tong shares traditional Chinese, Western-influenced rock 'n’ roll, and ancient Chinese styles on the sheng.

The first time I've ever heard this instrument, the sheng, I really loved it. So many things I've learned in my old age! I should have known it a long time ago. China is back! Long live China. Thank you Wu Tong! Thank you Silk Road Ensemble!

bravo!!! this is great. I found it because I was looking for the history of pipe/reed/pump organs. I wondered how it started in India. The early Indian gov't post independance of the British, banned it because it was considered European well... who knows?
