Only 4, 400 employees (6.8%) applied for early retirement or voluntary separation.
The rest of the 16, 890 employees (21%) applied for voluntary unpaid leave for different periods of time (from 6, 12 or 18 months).

Will that be enough to prevent layoffs?
Will it allow Southwest to come out as a leaner airline, as its CEO wants?
