I listened to this album, and this song in particular, a lot last year when I was in a very bad place mentally. I find weary and desolate music like this very comforting when I’m really depressed. This song in particular will probably hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life.

This has always been my favourite track from the album

A song about a man who just got out of prison where he had realized he didn't need possessions, waited for a lover he had been planning to meet but didn't show up, found out she had been stolen by his friend, and is on his way to find them weighted down only with a gun. Recorded by a man who had just got out of prison a week ago, ladies and gentlemen Skip Spence lyrical mad genius.

If you don't see the word play between darning / darling... then hopefully you noticed how he started "weighted down" by possessions, a gun and decisions... to "waiting" with possessions, decisions and...a gun. One of the most well crafted lyrics I can think of.

Skip may be the most tortured soul in rock&roll history. His album OAR was true solo and this song probably captures the torture he was going through while confined to "Bellevue".

Note to self: Never, ever, ever agree to meet anyone by a river.
You're just f'n asking for it

By "possession" does he mean material things or mental demons?

Either way, a haunting, wonderful song.
