Tableau and Business Intelligence (BI) Tools in general wouldn't be where they are today if its wasn't for dashboard interactive-ness which in Tableau are called Actions.
In particular, the behaviour where you click on a graphic such as a bar chart, it will cause filtering or changes in the remaining visualizations giving you the ability to explore the data on the fly.
In Tableau there are 7 general types of Actions:
1. Standard Action - Use as Filter
This is the easiest to setup as its a single click of the mouse. It will let you very quickly introduce action filtering across the whole dashboard.
2. Custom Actions - Ignore Filter, Target/Source Sheets, Click Behaviour.
This is when you want to introduce very specific behaviour to your actions by controlling where an when it activates and under specific conditions giving a much more designed user experience rather than general filtering actions.
3. Highlight
By click on one interaction it will highlight corresponding values in another viz but not filter our parts which do not meet the filter. This is great when you want to see values in context.
4. Go to URL
Upon clicking a sheet, Tableau will direct you to a Webpage of your choosing. It can be as simple as Google or as complex as a Tableau Online/Server dashboard or your company intranet pages.
5. Go to Sheet
This is great for when you want to go to another sheet in your workbook for further information. In the professional world, the main reasons for doing this is you want further information to be easily accessible but not be present on the main summary page.
6. Change Parameter
Getting into more complex actions now, this action can actually alter parameters. Parameters in itself is a huge subject and you can use them for all sorts of things; calculations, visualizations, group controls and more.
7. Change Sets
Sets in Tableau refer to a collection of values being in or out of a set. IN the context of actions, you can control what goes in or out of an action on the fly. Subsequent calculations and visualizations connected to that set will also alter themselves again allowing you dive deeper in your data.
