Wheel of Time Season 3 Episode 6 was a great setup for the events of the battle of the Two Rivers which we get to see in Goldeneyes, the 7th episode of The Wheel of Time Season 3 and the events that take place in Tanchico and in the Aiel Waste. I talk about how some of the condensed storyline is handled in the show without sacrificing too much of the plot from the books. We dive into all the differences and similarities between the books and the show for Episode 6 of the 3rd Season of The Wheel of Time!

Thanks for the breakdown. I'm just catching up now. One of my favourite episodes.

Thank you for an excellent breakdown. One thing that I noticed was a blink and you miss it moment where Thom is declaring he want's nothing to do with whatever Mat is up to but when Mat mentions Lianadrin, Thom mentions her surname which was not something Mat told him. I'm guessing the show is hinting at Liandrin having some involvement in illegally gentling Thom's nephew. In the books its implied that Elaida might have had something to do with a campaign of illegal gentling aka The Vileness thought its not clear from what I remember but I don't think Liandrin had anything to do with that.

A little more subtly perhaps, but they also seem to be speed running the evolution of Mat and Elayne's friendship in the books... where they start out kind of contemptuous of each other, but as they are forced to work together they gradually begin to respect each other which eventually morphs into a rather strong (platonic) friendship. Of course it takes 7+ books to get there but here they seem to be encapsulating that journey into a single season.

Cold open basically confirms we have had dark friends in the tower for at least around 90 years. Latest teaser confirms we have Sammodean.

I’ve always found the super quick fight scenes to be much more impressive than long, drawn-out battles. Rand doing an ‘Indiana Jones’ on Turak and crew was immensely more satisfying than the book version of a sword duel that Rand nearly lost. The Forsaken are an arrogant bunch who think they’re better than anyone from this age; Rand and Nynaeve disabuses them of this belief throughout the series.

Ooo, we're getting a new character in E8? Can't wait!

Fun fact about Sammael's attack on Cold Rocks Hold: at JCon, Sarah Nakamura told us that they did plan to have the whole shadowspawn attack and larger-scale battle, but they had to scrap it (after already doing some work to make it happen) due to budget constraints.

Worth noting that in the books, Fain also isn't exactly a Darkfriend. He's in the Two Rivers because he wants to lure Rand there and kill him, but he's not directly in charge of the Trollocs (although he is capable of taking control of a few of them when he needs to, I believe). (The Trollocs were basically under the control of Luc/Isam/Slayer, and they were actually primarily there specifically to hunt down and get rid of Fain, iirc.) The show hasn't really suggested yet that Fain/Mordeth and Shadar Logoth are a source of evil separate from the Dark One (which means it'll be interesting to see how they explain a certain major event later in the plot).

The scene with Rand trying to resurrect the girl was at the beginning of TSR, not TDR. (That attack was partly what convinced him to head for Rhuidean instead of starting a war with Illian/Sammael the way Moiraine wanted, iirc.)

In the book scene with the child, Rand is weilding Callendor.

My one slight quibble is that I still disagree with the people that think the show-child scene is better for the reason that we don't even know who book-child was. The book-child being nameless and unknown was the point, to me.

That's not me saying they should have done it this way or that it would have worked on-screen or etc! The show version was very good, I liked it, and there was certainly more emotional investment for the viewers. I just feel like that aspect of it keeps getting dropped in favor of the "ah this makes more sense because he knew her".

Rand didn't *have* to know this child to know she was dead because of him (the cause is also different in that in the show it was his recklessness with the power, but in the book it was arguably his *reluctance* to use it -- or at least that's what Lanfear would have him take away from it), and I think that was also a powerful sentiment. She didn't have to be charming or cute or related to someone we know to matter. Hard sell for TV though for certain, and as I said I liked the show version very much :)

Thought I had missed this breakdown for E6. A very comprehensive review. Did you give it a rating? I'm still a bit surprised tomorrow is E8, the season finale. Feels like the season just started.

I thought Lanfear liked to say she was the best in Tel’aron’rhiod but Moghedian has better control? I can’t remember who said it. Maybe Moridin?

You are so clever that you don't realise that the way the villains were written is a feature and not a flaw. The true villains were people who think they're doing good whilst looking out for their selfish interests - being human.

One of Rand's final thoughts: the Dark One was never the enemy.

You think the twins is an Easter egg for the battle of Tar Valon?

I have a question for you please . Id Egwain ( sorry I probably didn’t spell that correctly ) is she really bossy in the books ? She seems so mean to everyone except the other 4 . I’m thinking about starting the wheel of time books . I love fantasy.
