Sometimes 480p is an option

It's not uncommon for modern games to offer a resolution scaling option or even a default 800 x 600 setting within the graphics menu. What isn't usually included though is the choice to run things at 640 x 480, or 480p.

One of the best looking games around, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, can be made to look truly awful thanks to the wide range of visual presets.

I just watched this video in 1080p. Sorry for using up all the internet, I hope they’ll be restocking soon

the game looks more real at 480p in a weird way as its harder to make out the small imperfections that break the illusion of full realism, granted you probably need to have all other settings at Ultra

The title: Sometimes 480p is an option
The video: loads in 240p

I think since a lot of the in-game objects are far away, I don't notice the 480p as much. 480p in an fps is pretty rough, but here...not so bad at all!

Imagine seeing that during the PS2 era and being like “graphics can’t get any better”

It has almost a vintage...early 2000's TV footage/digital photography look to it. I love it.

Honestly if put on a CRT it would look geniunely amazing. Game looks good at 480p as is

It do be like this sometimes. I remember originally playing The Witcher 3 in 480p.
But hey, 480p makes Flight Sim look all nice and blurry, almost hiding the fact that this is a game and making it seem like an old-timey video. I like it, lol.

For my Ryzen 2500U laptop. the first thing I do after a driver update is to add 848x480, 960x540, 1066x600 and 1440x810. It's great low/mid resolutions to give more performance alternatives, but still allowing 16:9 widescreen. Another thing that is really cool is the Lossless Scaler (found on Steam for 3.99$) which can add integer scaling for 540p and even FSR... Although the FSR is a bad implementation as it upscales the whole image (low res post-processing and HUD, which goes against best practice FSR implementation where high-res post-processing and HUD should be added on top of the upscaling). The biggest issue with my laptop is thermals. Although I can run The Witcher 3 at 720p30fps. I can't do it for too long. That's why I found 540p FSR to be a wonderful low res compromise. FSR makes it look like 720p, and the graphics don't have to be pristine when doing side quests. :)

I have no doubt that 480p, high-ish settings would look incredible on a crt

480p + appropriate setting looks surprisingly realistic, it's like an old tv show

the lowest settings look realistic enough to make it look like it's a late 90s VHS tape

Oh yes, I bet 90's kids dreamed of gaming at 480p in 2021

My favorite part (2:26) - "Apparently we're in a rainstorm above Ireland, but who really knows.. "

480p looks like the airplane instruction videos from the 80's.

I love how RGHD comes up with awkwardly random information to present to the community, that always feels wholesome

Seeing the humber bridge at the beginning felt strange as a person who lives quite close to it.
