If you come to Chiang Mai and the North of Thailand you absolutely have to visit one of the Elephant sanctuaries or villages. It was the best thing out of all experiences I had in Thailand during 2 months of travelling.

There are many elephant sanctuaries around Chiang Mai.
I visited the Elephant Freedom Village and I absolutely loved it and highly recommend you to go there once you are around Chiang Mai.
It is located around 1.5 hours by car from the city and offers a full-day experience of spending time with elephants in their natural environment.
Non, the founder of this sanctuary, was a great host and explained everything and clearly cared about the elephants.
Find out everything about the Elephant Freedom Village here:

During your day tour you have the chance to feed the elephants, interact with them, bathe them and many more.

Before you visit elephants in Thailand please do some research about ethical treatment and do not support activities that involve unnatural behavior like riding elephants.
