War has raged across the land, leaving nothing but fire and ruins. Friends and foes alike realize, they made a horrible mistake, they’ve doomed themselves. There’s no saving the once beloved land they called home. They grew up side by side, and were driven apart by the greed and hubris of people they’d never meet. Forced to fight on opposing sides, they grow further apart and destroy everything in sight, until there’s nothing left to fight over. They remember how good life was until then, and they wonder where they went wrong, what they had done to deserve this suffering and devastation. Now, with nothing left to fight for, friends and foes alike will die knowing that everything they’d done was pointless. They’ve reached the end of their rope; there’s nothing more for them to lose. Death looms over them as they have no resources to keep them alive. The world they live in is beyond repair, they’ll all perish. They face this awful realization, knowing that, friend or foe, it didn’t matter anymore. They were already dead, so there was no point in taking sides. They knew, they would face death together, and reminisce about the good times, before they were pitted against one another. They remember how they promised to fight for what’s right, but ended up reducing everything around them to ruins in their attempts. Nobody was victorious, for there was nothing to gain and everything was lost. One by one, they perish until only two remain, the best of friends who, despite it all, never gave up hope; all their comrades were dead. They stared at each other, silently. They knew what they had done and were full of regret, but it was too late. They had to live with their mistakes and die because of them. They brought their hands together and grasped them firmly. It would their final goodbye to each other before death’s clutches reached them. Here they were, ready to die, knowing they had nothing to lose. They would die as they had lived: as friends. There they laid, two corpses, now nothing more than lifeless husks. There they were, dead in the ashes...
