I lived in Germany as teen (military brat) and loved it. So easy to literally drive to another country. I lived in Landstuhl in late 90s. I would love to live there again.

I met and married a German girl. Her folks, my folks (American) got along famously. Even had relatives visiting us in California that didn't speak English and we got along great. On rare occasion you see someone that literally takes your breath away. I suspect that the stares you received in Germany were due to your stunning looks. I don't know if you got a vibe that suggested disapproval or the typical "creepy guy" gaze, but certainly could understand the difficulty of breaking away from a look by you. you're right. Two things important in Germany are bier (oops, beer) and bread; one of the things that they miss the most in another country is the German bakery, something we don't have here is USA.

I was never a cake person but I like the cakes here in Germany. I like that every fruit season has such delicious cakes and not too sweet. Fruits and veggies are great here. I love and I mean love Schnitzel. I have even mastered making my own at home. I appreciate the travel convenience too. I flew inexpensively to London and traveled by train to Paris. Also visited other cool cities in Europe. As far as the people, after living here going on 11 years, I have mostly positive experiences.
