I am from germany, your video reminds me back in my childhood (around 20 years ago, i was 12-13);
i built crystal radios using a germanium diode (0, 3 V).
It is really amazing that a normal razor blade and a pencil work as a semiconductor.

That was so exciting:
I moved the wire at the coil and hear voices in the hissing.

Thats what am missing at todays childs:
They don´t do handicraft / things with hands, only watching at their smartphone.

Mi hai fatto ricordare gli esperimenti fatti a scuola di elettronica negli anni 70
Bellissimo.. bravo

We made radios like this in the 50's as kids. This is about the first type of radio ever and was first used around 1900. Nice to see people are still into making them. But only thing new here is how many people think this is "amazing"

You talk and make things too fast, it's hard for me to follow.

I had an older brother who did a radio like this when we were kids. This was more than 50 years ago.

I will try to do a little radio.

I wish you could teach how to do a walkie-talkie, too.

I don't know how thin the cooper wire must be.

Thank you for the video.

Hi, great video! Big fun of these DIY project :)

I am an educator and plan to design a lab to ask my students to build this radio in a lab and then, in turn, teach them P-N junction and semiconductor. I am trying to understand the science behind this Razer diode. After a day of google, I end up knowing it is a "metal-semiconductor" junction or a "cat-whisker detector" and it works like a Schottky diode. However, I am still confused about the following:

1) What is the anode and cathode in this razor-pencil diode?

2) If the steel is the metal and the graphite is the semiconductors, what is the reason for having "blue steel", is it related to the oxide? or is it related to the crystal structure and therefore the bandgap changes of steel after heat treatment?

3) If the iron oxide is really needed for it to work, then there is oxide in both side of the iron, why is it diode? it sounds more like a transistor to me.

I will be very grateful if anyone here can give some insight or direct me to the right source. Many thanks! :)

Does the thickness of the wire on the coil make any difference of the results????
