it was the answer to the Soviet Mig 25, since the Americans saw pictures, and assumed that it was made of a new special material, and believed that the large wings were for maneuverability. Also, it was setting new records for speed and altitude, so the US had to make something better. They created the iconic F-15 eagle, setting new records for altitude, reaching the edge of space, and new records for speeds. One day, a Soviet pilot stole his mig 25, and took it to US territory. The US found that it's high speeds would damage the engine permanently, the large wings were just to get the thing in the air, and it was made of steel, so the F-15 was decades ahead of it's rival.

The F-15 was the star of the largest dogfight in modern history, where 90 IAF jets had a massive battle with 100 Syrian jets and 30 USSR anti-air system batteries. At least 85 Syrian jets were destroyed, (many before they could even get off the ground significantly) and 29 of the 30 SAM sites were destroyed. Only 2 F-15s were damaged, and both were able to fly back to base for repairs. And thus the legend surrounding this plane was born. It then went on to continue its winning streak in the Gulf War.

Basically, the US engineered the F-15 for a threat that the USSR bragged about (the MiG-25 Foxbat), but which turned out to be nowhere near as powerful as they claimed. This left the US with a massively over-engineered fighter for the current threats.

The F-15 actually has more thrust than the Saturn V rocket... Yes, the rocket that took Apollo 11 to the moon. A fighter jet has more thrust than a rocket designed to luanch a payload into space
