That nickel's biggest problem holding it back from being worth big money is the fact that it looks completely normal

Very neat specimen indeed . That is a great way to show rarity doesn’t always equal huge value. Someone was really thorough to be able find that one. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍

That's really cool! Is this due to an improper alloy mix? Nickel is ferromagnetic, maybe it's more nickel than copper? Now you've got me trying to stick my nickels to a magnet! 😂

Could be a Canadian planchet somehow?? Great coin though!! 🤘

As I recall, Canadian nickels were magnetic due to their high nickel content until the early '80s. So might this be an example of a U.S. coin being struck on a planchet meant for the Canadian mint? That could also imply that there are more in circulation if there was a large number of planchets in the batch.

I agree with others speculating that it's probably on a Canadian 5¢ planchet. I don't remember whether 1979 might have been a year when the US mint was striking coinage for Canada or whether the source of cupro-nickel planchets for US 5¢ may also have been supplying 100% nickel blanks to the Canadian mint.

I have one that's more RARE than ALL of them. Yea, I've got an actual mint state wooden nickel. 💰

How could that error EVER have happened?

Nickel is magnetic. But because there's only 25% nickel in a nickel, so it probably doesn't stick to weak magnets.
So this planchet has more nickel content? What is the percentage of nickel there are devices that can tell you the metal content.

A lot of the listings on eBay, etc. are hilarious.

Coin Errors is an aspect of Coin Collecting that I have always had zero interest in! I would rather buy a Graded Bust Head, Seated Liberty, Walking Liberty, Franklin 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, Morgan, Peace, or even a 40% Ike, and ASE, anytime. Daniel has 25 Graded Morgans in his shop right now I would rather buy than any of those coins, including two graded CC coins, I do not have one of those.
