I got into both and chose St Andrews. It's got a better reputation for undergrad studies, and the college experience with all its traditions and smaller community is unrivaled.

Correct. But global ratings use criteria which are heavily weighted towards size. One criterion is the NUMBER of research papers - clearly any bigger university will put out more.Another is NUMBER of citations: again more papers, more citations. Another criterion is "reputation amongst other academics", which is very subjective. And so on.
The UK league tables include student satisfaction, teaching and support quality, QUALITY of research, entry levels and graduate success, which are far more important and apply to large and small universities equally. As of 2024, St Andrews is no 1 in both the Times and Guardian league tables.
I have been associated with both universities. They are both world class institutions in truly wonderful locations. If you like a small, intimate university with world leading standards of research, teaching and support, I'm certain you'd love St Andrews (I did). If you want a university in a large city with an astounding cultural and sporting scene and many superb departments, Edinburgh is equally great.
They can stand toe to toe with Oxford and Cambridge and concede nothing.
