Seamripper. Basically your best friend when sewing. And as an add on note to that. Learn stitch length. Nothing is worse then messing up and your stitches are too small to even see to seamrip. Great video wendy. So right about handsewing. While you may want to do everything on the machine. Certain jobs are better hand stitched.

Here's the first episode of a new beginner-friendly series I'm doing here :) do you have a fave or least fave sewing tool? Mine might be my pincushion bracelet, and my least fave corresponds to my least fave sewing activity if you know what it is 😭😭

I 100% agree that sewing by hand=patience. I work at a living history museum and am often tasked with sewing things, mainly adjusting hems and mending. Recently I got a dress that was in really bad shape. It needed to be hemmed up and the bodice lining was falling apart, as were some seams along a casing for a drawstring. The hem took me about an hour total to pin up, machine baste, and machine sew using a blind stitch. Picking out the basting took another half hour. Hand sewing the lining back in and fixing the casing took me SIX HOURS. Six hours of slip stitching the lining back on and the casing closed. But the dress is now more wearable.

My mum is a dressmaker by trade (she didn't go to school for it, she learnt from her grandma) and when I was little I would always go to the fabric stores with her and spend hours watching her make different things. Those are some of my favourite childhood memories. Sewing was something that was always around me, and I learnt so many things by helping my mum. Even though I know more than the basics, it's always nice to get a refresher course and go over things again. Looking forward to this series. Love your videos <3

I literally got a sewing machine as a birthday gift from my friends a week ago ! This video series is coming at the perfect time for me ! I'm quite a beginner (even if I've been mending my clothes with just a needle and thread for years) so I'm looking forward to your next videos

I sew in my underwear as well lol. Can you also do a video on how to use the sewing machine, step by step super basics like setup/loading a sewing machine bobbin, what each type of thread/stitches to use etc.?

I sew almost exclusively in my underwear! I’m always trying things on at every step of the process so it’s way easier than trying to get redressed every time!

For sewing machines I think it's definitely good to mention to try and buy them used. Thrift stores might be tough because they're harder to test before you buy, but Kijiji and Craigslist always have people reselling. And for Torontonians, I was able to Bunz an Ikea sewing machine! It doesn't have a lot of features but it's great for my skill level right now.

I have a sewing machine but because of historical sewing I fell in love with hand sewing. It's just so relaxing. I rarely pull out the machine these days. So you can definitely do A LOT in level two :D

I am using the seam-ripper very often... It's a must-have when you are using a sewing-machine. Note that it usually came with the sewing machine but if you buy a second-hand or you broke yours, you can still buy it. You can also use embroidery scissors but that's not what I like the most. After that you have been really clear about sewing supplies!

I'm about 90% done in a 6-panel skirt sewn entirely by hand. My supplies: Needles, thread, regular scissors, measuring tape, an exacto knife (for cutting open seams), and a LOT of safety pins :D
I've been hand sewing for years now. I fix everything, modify everything, and I've learned (and come up with) various techniques and sewing patterns. It's not that slow, and you can take a great look at the details!

Definitely not alone. While mending/making an item, wearing another item is annoying. Having to switch them over all the time. I end up in underwear all the time. Thank you for another great video, looking forward to more.

I totally get what ur saying about all the accessories when it comes to advanced sewing. There helpful but not essential. I am a artist and when i started out I bought very basic and cheap supplies because I was learning. Now I have a few art supplies where I've invested more money in because I know what mediums I enjoy now and will use.

I have a few questions Wendy!

1. What do you do when your bobbin runs out of thread while sewing?

2. How to handle with the tension of a sewing machine?

3. How much and how many times do you back stitch when you start or end a sewing process. And also, if sewing a straight line to attach 2 fabrics together for instance, about how far should you place your fabric? (E.g. if I start from the edge of the fabric, the fabric doesn't get feed through the machine, if I start more inwards, the ends doesn't get attached nicely)

Thank you for all your videos! It really helped me a lot as a beginner! I also am really inspired by all things you've sewn!
