R-Type was developed by Rainbow Arts and published by Electric Dreams in 1988. It is an adaptation of a side scrolling shooter from Irem Corp. It was developed by Manfred Trenz and Andreas Escher who later created the popular Turrican. According to Manfred Trenz, the basic structure of the program was previously used in Katakis with other graphics, levels and music. Trenz apparently wasn't happy with his version of R-Type. In an interview with the Power Play-magazine he said: "With R-Type, I would liked to have more time to make the game more error-free and better playable." Nevertheless, the game got a very good rating of 82%.
