Andrei Linde and Renata Kallosh - What Would Multiple Universes Mean?

Is there more than one universe? According to current cosmology, our entire gigantic universe is only one of innumerable universes, each universe like one tiny bubble in a limitless ocean of universes. It’s called a ‘multiverse’ and it radically expands the size of reality. Could multiple universes, the multiverse, be infinite in size? What could this mean?

Andrei Dmitriyevich Linde is a Russian-American theoretical physicist and the Harald Trap Friis Professor of Physics at Stanford University. Linde is one of the main authors of the inflationary universe theory, as well as the theory of eternal inflation and inflationary multiverse.

Renata Elizaveta Kallosh is a Russian-American theoretical physicist. She is a professor of physics at Stanford University, working there on supergravity, string theory and inflationary cosmology.

One problem i see with the “anthropic principle” is that it can’t define what counts as an “anthropos”. Me personally? Humankind? Any conscious being? Because we don’t know what a conscious being can be, or what consciousness is. Perhaps consciousness can indeed exist in a universe without protons. We have no theory of it.

2:42 ... cosmology it's so easy (?) ... okay let's really try to understand the collaboration which is really what you've done in your physics marriage literally and figuratively is actually extremely important because if we have these two dominant theories in the world multiuniversies and cosmology and string theory with all the different vacuum in string theory if both are real they have to work together so Renata how would that begin to happen? 3:16 RK: 5:38 ... string theory has in addtion to time and the three dimensions which we see consistent version requires six extra dimentsions and those dimensions should be extremely small kind of cored but this still this six-dimensional space is very unusual so when I was explaining it at the multiverse conference which was at Stanford I was using a picture of a slice of Quintic which is one of the famous Calabi–Yau spaces it is now on the book universe or multiverse because it was my way to explain people the technical part of the story if you look at this picture you see lots of holes in this space (I have a very similar picture here on the computer) so I was using analogous picture which I was trying to explain because this multiverse symposium which we had at Stanford we have physicisits as well as philosophers 6:33 7:28 ... The universe is on an optimization pathway, there are possibilities that will result in a failure state and an accrued mechanism for compilation of valued information. The whole is infinite.

So the question of atomic structures having their perfect atomic weight to allow the possibility of life and our existence begs the question. So if we live in a universe with infinite creations and destructions from an oscillating universe then could universes exist that do not have life or could it be that there is a force that allows the atomic structures to exist that allows the possibility of life every time a new universe is reincarnated or is it a variation of cycles of universes with life and universes without life ?

A blindfolded archer standing in an open field shoots an arrow up into the air. After he hears the arrow hit the ground, he takes off his blindfold and sees the arrow sticking in the ground between the feet of a person standing a small distance away. How incredible that as a blindfolded archer he can shoot an arrow up into the air and make it land that precisely! If the wind changed slightly, if the arrow was heavier, if he had a different strength bow, .... if any of a bunch of variables were not perfect....

Or perhaps after the arrow landed the other guy ran up to the spot and stood over it before the archer saw him?

From the initial evidence provided, either approach can be justified. And other possibilities. That one of multiple optional approaches is personally chosen is not in any way proof of anything other than we exist within certain sets of conditions. In an environment that of it would kill us instantly. But those variables...!

No need for a multiverse, space is likely flat and there fore infinite. This means the universe is full of repeating multiverses.

If we then have multiverses on top of that; anything that can happen has happened or will happen occupying the same space we do just an infinite distance away. Space must repeat itself.

I read Parmenides twice, the Hackett edition and Thomas Taylor's(superior) translation, and also I'm on book 4 of 7 of Proclus commentary on the Parmenides(Masterful work). I'm willing to bet there's not a better work to study or reference concerning the title question of this here video.

You know mankind use to think Earth was the only planet with not onky the Sun going around the earth but that the Sun was the only star, then other planets were discocered, then other stars were discovered, then what was considered other stars turned out to whole other galaxies. So i can see with some calculations and ancient Eastern philosophies that a multiverse seems to me to be highly possible with all maner of phyics in them that cannot build stuff or lifeforms, so it is more acceptable than the 18, 000 different mmythical gods mankind has made up sense we stared building cities and the want of controlling its populations with fear of corse not withstanding Zen Buddhaism and Taoism....
