In this video I take a closer look at the forgotten hot Golf, the Mk6 Golf R. Less tuneful than the MK5 R32 that it replaced yet slower than the Mk7 Golf R that came after it. Is there anything about the Mk6 Golf R that makes is special? Could it even be better than a Mk7? Let's find out...

call me weird but I think the MK6 golf is one of the best looking cars ever made. Ever since I was a kid and saw them on the road I thought they looked good, now I own one for 3 years and I still think it looks better than almost anything on the road.

I've owned a silver 5 door MK6 R for the past 5 years and I love it to bits. At the time I was going to consider buying a mk7. I test drove both and the Mk7 felt like a improvement, as you would expect. But there was something really unique about the Mk6. Now, 5 years on, I'm loving my Mk6 and it was the best decision I made. I see loads of Mk7 Rs across London and I'll be seriously lucky to see a 6. The gap between 6 and 7 on the 2nd hand market is beginning to close and it will not be long before they are level.
I've had a stage 1 remap and milltek exhausts. It's pushing around 310. I don't need anymore power than that if i'm honest. I've driven to the South of France twice and worthersee Austria for the gti show. Even at the show people kept asking me if it was a real R.
My opinion, with so few around it's likely going to hold its value and be a sort after Golf as time goes by.

Just picked up a 2013 golf r and really like it so far. 40000 mile one owner and it’s Volkswagen certified. Came with a two year warranty through Volkswagen

I've had the honor of owning both an mk6r and a mk7 gti, just like you, I found that the mk7 felt very over assisted and numb on the electric ps and ea888 makes a really tin kind of 4 cylinder sound which I don't like. My mk6r I still currently own, I love it to death and would keep it for life. CDL Ea113 might be an old engine and has its flaws but I'd take it any day over an mk7r

My 2013 MK6 R has been a great daily driver since new. Only routine maintenance, and (most importantly) new tires. The OEM Dunlops made the car feel slothful in the handling department. I need A/S tires for practicality, so I replaced the Dunlops with Michelin PS/AS-3+, and the difference in overall grip was noticeable and notable after the "new tire" film wore off. The car is almost devoid of wind noise on the highway (the Michelins have a road hum that's been muted with wear). No creaks or rattles yet, though my city streets remain optimistically rough. The interior is holding up as almost new. I'm using APR's Stage_2+ software with it's downpipe exhaust, moving up from Stage_1 and 1+. Never a CE light, never a hiccup. Still on the OEM clutch after 7k miles on 2+!
Of course I agree the Mk7R is the better performer, and better tuning platform. I imagine driving 7/10ths in the 7R is like 8/10ths+ in the 6R. Still, as said, I see more of them on the road than I do the Mk6 R. That scarcity seems a comfort to me. I prefer the 6R's styling over the 7R (though I don't find the 7R's looks objectionable), so to each his own. I still sometimes find myself looking back at my car as I walk away from it. From the front it looks like Demon-seed. from the rear, just a normal Golf. Lastly, here in the US, the 6R was never offered with an automatic tranny. All the better to go rowing through the gears (DieselGeek short-shift kit here). One can't get enough practice driving a manual (and melding with the R); it's the perfect visceral driving experience.

I've owned my Mk6R DSG for 12yrs now and still loving it, it's been about as reliable as a hammer too. It's been running APR 1+ for many years, modifications include Intake, HP fuel pump and a stiffer rear sway bar. Competition is stiff as I'm bench marking it against my other toys (BMW 1M and a 911).

I have just discovered this little site. Power is all relative. Until I bought my mark 7 GTI 220 PS I had had two basic Honda Jazzes and diesel people carriers, that kind of thing for decades. You can imagine my astonishment with the performance of the GTI. Whilst it is very modest compared with many cars, it has very useable power on our roads. My main drive is a Peugeot Boxer camper with 110 PS and is 2.6 tonnes. I love it to bits as it is so comfortable and easy to drive but it is quite a contrast with the GTI.

Andrew,
We have both, with DSG and dynamic chassis control, better is a very subjective word, I would say not, I think the Mk 7 is much better, having said that the Mk6 is still very good.

I drove a mk6 gti dsg and then a mk7 gti manual and loved the mk6 much more. The visibility seemed so much better on the mk6 aswell as the leather seats vs the leathers on the mk7.

I’ve owned by the 6 and 7.5, both in 6sp man form. To my mind the steering feel and weight is far superior in the 7.5 and, in race mode, feels more direct lock to lock. I think this is backed up by the specs. Both the primary and secondary rides are vastly better in the Mk 7.5 as is the brake and clutch feel (especially when you remove the clutch support spring on the 7.5), and the gear change is much less wooly and numb than the 6. One other key thing that may get missed on first look is that VW moved the front axle forward and when you look at the side profiles of both the 6 and 7/7.5 it’s something that once seen, can’t be unseen. This, combined with the much wider track on the later car leads to improved handling and ride. Finally interior space, especially elbow space, is vastly superior in the later car. In the end, VW have done a fantastic job in evolving this car (with exception of the god-awful MK4) and I can’t wait for the MK8 which I’m sure will be a quantum leap in all areas over the current model

I agree, I owned an edition 30 for over 7 years and currently own an edition 35 cause I like to be different and have something that is not common.

Mk5 r32 checking in!!! The 3.2 wins all day long against this glorified gti. You don’t need to ‘thrash’ an r32 to enjoy it and the power delivery from a naturally aspirated engine is like poetry in motion.

Hi pal....I've always said the MK6-R is/was unbelievably underrated..why?..I don't know.... I've always preferred them to the MK7..they look way better..they have the streamlined-wing-to-rear look thats reminiscent of the MK3..which disappeared on the MK7's....The interior was better..especially the half-heated black leather with the alcantara suede....And they're equally as tunable and yet from when they first came out an unbelievable "10" years ago..we rarely see them on the road..its an absolute travesty..as they're as modern as the MK7 in every way....Great video comparing these 2 related titans....

Great video and fab cars. These are getting very rare now. Hardly ever see one on the road. Where the MK7 plenty to see where ever you go. 👍
