Castle Fraser is situated in Kemnay in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is the largest Z-plan tower house there. The castle is surrounded by trees and farmland covering almost 300 acres.
Castle Fraser was built in the 1400s according to archaeological evidence and was given to the Fraser family by King James II in 1454. Initially, the constructed area did not cover a significant space. 6th laird of the Fraser family, Micheal Fraser reconstructed it in the 1575s and made a Z-plan tower house having 5 storeys. It witnessed many variations with time. The last modifications by the Fraser family happened in 1838. Frederick Mackenzie Fraser last male laird of the castle. Unfortunately, he did not have any child to inherit it. So, his widow sold it in 1921.
In 1976, it was given to the National Trust For Scotland by the Pearson family. Today, the castle is open for visitors all year round and they have to pay a small fee. The garden visit time is from 10:00 am to 16:00 pm, while the grounds can be visited from dawn to dusk.
