I played Billy's green bass once expecting the action to be really low and easy. Holy snarkies was that thing a bear to play. He works for what he gets out of it.

That drummer has the look on his face!
I would have that too if i kept the beat for guthrie and billy on stage!

This is a song from Billy Cobham's solo album spectrum with Tommy Bolin on guitar.

Check out the 1974 live version by Tommy Bolin the original guitarist who played it on the Billy Cobham album 'Spectrum'.

Billy is simply the best treble player on the planet.... Love this Cobham tune...they should have called him up and had him sit in for the jam.

Yes, it is. It's become a modern jazz classic, covered by many people.

Theirs a difference between that bass and the ones billy plays.

When Billy gets a new bass he sets the neck truly flat, marks each fret on the top with a marker. Billy then file the frets down to see which ones are higher then others. he then dresses the frets to his liking and sets everything on the bass to his liking.

Billy uses very low action live as well. so that bass you played probably just hat to be set up.

@GrahamYoungGuitar he also had a drop d detuner. so he uses them in combination to get that low of a note. i play the attitude bass. it has such a solid neck joint that you really dont have to worry about it.

@JosephCote27 I might switch billy out for jonas hellborg, but gavin and guthrie together would create a ripple in time

Personally, I'll always be the most fond of his time in Mr. Big, but I'm digging the stuff he's doing with MacAlpine. Nothing against Vai, btw. Love his stuff, too.

@GrahamYoungGuitar
it´s a nice trick. You just move the neck and maintain the body still, but sheehan have a special setting in his bass to do that way. You can try it in the guitar, to get some nice vibrato; Gary Moore used to do this a lot, see Parisenne Walkway to understand what i´m saying

@williamwst I know what bending a neck is, but it just seems REALLY far for a just a neck bend. But, maybe I'm too scared to bend a neck as far as Sheehan did...
