I inherited my grandmothers watercolors too. Half of them I had to cut the tube to get them out but once I did they worked just as well as brand new ones. Plus it’s fun to see the difference between an old school formula and the newer ones.

Hi Jess!

While you're right that student grade paints are more likely to crack, some pigments of some professional brands are still quite prone to cracking. Earth colours in general, and specifically those from brands like Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton that don't formulate their paints with honey or another humectant, are likely to shrink and dry quite hard, which can lead to cracking. Some people will mix a tiny bit of honey into their pans to avoid this, or if you pour your pans in layers, drying in between, you can avoid getting big crack and loose paint crumbles in your finished pans.

Cracking is primarily a problem in dryer climates. In more humid climates, you're more likely to get the opposite problem, where honey-based paints stay fluid and sticky and never fully dry!

Wow 😮 I would have never thought of cutting the tubes and getting the dried paint out to put into the pans. That’s a fantastic idea! I will definitely have to try this for my old paint tubes. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hey Jess, just a heads up that the QoR & MGraham will both stay sticky and never fully set up. The MG uses a honey binder, and QoRs Aquazol also doesn't fully harden with some pigments as well. Good to know when you need to take the pans out again and end up with paint on your fingers ;)

Wow 😮!! I would have never thought to cut the dried tubes of paint and just press it into the pans. Fantastic idea and definitely a great way to get my old tubes of used now. Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

watching you refilling the yellow one without cleaning out the green leftover first gave me the heebie jeebies. And then it was somewhat liberating. :)

Cracking can happen in professional quality paints too because I've been having issues with my Daniel Smith Phthalo Blue Red Shade cracking and separating from the sides of the half pan as it dried. I think that particular tube might have been kind of old since it wasn't as smooth as some of my other tubes, so maybe that's why the cracking happens. Sometimes it's because there are air bubbles in the paint after it's poured into the pan so stirring the paint really well before it dries in the pan can help with that as well.

I gotta do the rectangle cuts on some old paints. This is a good idea.

I love how you scrape the paints, nothing is wasted!

Did you keep the same colors for sentimental reasons or are they colors you continue to love after two years later?

I lost myself watching this! Extremely satisfying

Idea! Instead of throwing the empty tubes put them all in one mug of water and you will have a beautiful grey. Use to paint shadows or what ever you decide 😃

You should try a tube squeezer. They get all the paint out. I bought one called The Big Squeeze. 😊

I've been doing some watercolor learnin', and your first pallet tutorial was suggested. I wanted to check our your channel, and here is an update! :) I think you have the same nail polish.

I enjoyed your palette refilling video. Just one question: when you refilled a color and didn’t wash out the dirty residue of old colors off the pan, does that make subsequent pigment muddy?

Could you please tell me what those two bright turquoisey colors are at 0:04 (at bottom)? Thank you!
