There is a lot of history surrounding this canal. Conceived in the 1st century AD it never really took off till 1881. Eventually completed in 1893. Someone cursed the canal as it's been fraught with problems. # ancient rulers suffered deaths. A number of contractors in recent times went bankrupt. Eventually it did get completed but never to realize the dream. The canal was to shallow and narrow for large cargo vessels. The soft limestone walls are prone to collapse. Mostly now it's used for recreational vessels that pay a fee.

The Canal does save 400 miles not having to sail around the peninsula. Although now it can be called an island as it's surrounded on all sides with water.
