True story... I was at some random event at my college once years ago and I was talked to someone and all of a sudden they paused, stared at me and asked "are you a dancer?" and I was like "uuh... yes? How'd you guess that?"... their answer? "You're standing turned out" 🤣

Diane Vishneva (my paraphrasing) complained that dancers today are practicing more to hyper-stretch than dance. Ballet is not wildly over stretching and she instantly became a fave with that comment.

I have loved ballet all my life but from afar. My idol growing up was Anna Pavlova. We couldn’t afford dance classes so I read books about her and the ballet in general. I love watching your videos. You’re so sweet and charming with everyone you fit, it brings me joy to watch you helping young people achieve their dreams. You have a knack for knowing just what is needed—it’s a gift. I don't walk turned out, but I was a gymnast when I was younger. To this day I walk with one foot directly in front of the other, and so does every other gymnast I know.

So, to start let me just say, I am not a dancer. Other than in my own imagination. I am also very much pigeon-toed. My mother would always holler at me to “turn out your feet!”. When I was about 14, my mother and I were in the grocery store, my mother had just told me to turn out my feet, when this woman and two older teenage girls stood in line behind us. They started whispering, giggling, and getting excited. At this point my anxiety went through the roof, and I was ready to get the heck outta there, thinking they were laughing and saying rude things amongst themselves about me, as I wore a back brace at the time, and it was often the source of hushed whispers and giggles....anywho, just as I’m about to ask my mother if I can have the keys to go sit in the car, the woman says...”honey, where do you take dance?” Amused and snarky my mother says....”why on earth would you think (insert snarky tone, here) she can dance!?” To which one of the older teenaged girls said....”because she has an amazing turn out!” My mother (of course) patted herself on the back, but...it honestly was the best compliment, I think I’ve ever received!

Both my grandmother, and my sister could walk around the house for 15 to 30 minutes on the tip of their toes minus any pointe shoes. Neither were dancers of course, other than when they were in their own homes. I went to do that once.... in my irish/ballet/tap/gymnastics class (9 to 10 hours every Saturday from a few months after my 2nd birthday. lol) I no sooner got up on my toes and my teacher nearly had a heart attack, and told me so many scary stories about what was going to happen if I did that again, that I never did.
