In all fairness, neither one should've been penalized as no advantage was gained by either rider. That said, if the AMA penalizes one rider for the "infraction", for fairness and consistency they've got to penalize both.
The AMA is known for inconsistency in applying its own rules - this is just another example.

I think the real difference here is that Deegon looked back before he re-entered the track and he did lose ground to kitchen between the time he went off and re-entered - So no advantage gained, in fact he lost a few bike lengths.

there was a difference between the two riders going off track, when Tom Vialle went off track it was a riding mistake. Tom skipped 4 whoops and maintained position ahead of Deegan. When Deegan went off track it was not because he overshot the berm like Tom did, it was because Deegan was unaware the berm had been blown out at the end. Deegan had no choice but to go off track, as you see in the video Deegan lost ground behind Levi. When you compare the two, one rider lost control and went off track, the other rider was forced off track because the berm blew out. The AMA does need to be more consistent, especially with Tuff-blocks and Yellow pole markers causing crashes and injuries to the riders.

It’s the same double standard as always. Been going on since the days of J Law and RV. Same as Hunter skipping the whoops twice while accelerating in the mud earlier this year, no penalty. On the other hand if Jason Anderson accelerates off track on a straight with no obstacle he’ll be docked a position. Douchgan did it in both motos and they turn a blind eye. Sexton did it the right way and was self penalized about 4 seconds but had he accelerated around the jump likely would have been docked a position.

Funny how people seemed to not care when deegan was the only one penalized in Birmingham supercross for doing what 3 others did at the exact same time that night. 🤔 The moto gods(ama) repaid deegan back for it. Deegan went 1-1. Move on.
