Step back in time with me at Den Gamle By in Aarhus, Denmark’s renowned open-air museum that brings history and craftsmanship to life! In this video, we explore the unique atmosphere of a recreated Danish town from the 1700s through the 1990s, complete with period homes, artisan workshops, and even a nostalgic 1990s Blockbuster Video store.

Denmark’s appreciation for crafts and trades stands in contrast to the divide we sometimes see in other countries, reminding us that fulfillment in work can lead to happiness and community strength. Join me as we discover why Denmark continues to rank among the happiest countries in the world, where every job is valued, and everyone’s skills matter.

10:00 the houses were taken down brick by brick and rebuild, massive effort to move them this way.

Did you try the Time Travel in Den Gamle By?
It takes you from early Viking age and all the way up till to day?
I absolutely love it!

Schools can book a day of 'learning by doing' in Den Gamle By as well. Then I visited with some kindgarden/preschool children, we have occasionally seen some of these school children being dressed up and being "bossed around" by some of the volunteer actors and having fun with it.

I love this museum 🥰!

I don't know if they still do this, but the gates are open 'after hours', so you can walk straight in and have a look around for free. Of course the exhibits aren't open, but it's nice that you have a walk around, or have a sit, if you want a break from the modern city outside.

Thanks for the video! I live nearby Botanisk Have and Den Gamle By, and it's always fun to see your own city with 'foreign eyes'.

I was born in Aarhus and still live there but have moved 5 km to the southwest but I was born in a settlement only 10 min walk, from the Old Town. When I was a child and teenager, it was my playground. was there almost every day. but back then it was not as it is today, back then it didn't cost anything to get in, But back in the 1980's I think it was made into a paid museum as it is today, and there have been the last 20-25 years, added 60'70'and 80 buildings - and it is very visited, now!

What if I told you that there are also museums underground 😂
You just missed the "time travel" building after the butcher and cheese store, there is an elevator that takes you underground and you are set in Aarhus (called ARoS back then) in the Viking Age and as you walk through the exhibitions throughout the history of Aarhus until present day.
There is also a museum about how they transport and re-ensemble the houses there, as others mention they are the original ones and not rebuilt.
I have a year pass and I still discover new things, and just when I believe I have seen it all, another house or exhibition is added. There are also several events and season based festivals out there

there are many great things about craftmanship and trades, it's areas we always need in society, there are loads of obs for those with skills, they get educated without having a huge debt (if you live in a country where higher education is not tax funded)they can buy a home and get a family while young and other young people are paying off debt, they cant start their own business quite easily, build on their skills if they want and a lot of them actually earn a lot of money, some trades pay more tan many higher educations, and a lot take a useless education these days

The big yellow signs on Blockbuster say "Going out of business sale."

FUn fact about trade education in Denmark. It takes 4.5 years to gain full education, the longest in the world.
Which means a lot of tradesmen, and woman, are highly sought after outside of Denmark, in fact most new 'traditional' sweedish wooden homes are built by Danes.

Yeah, Den Gamle By isn't a museum you "check out" quickly. I would reserve at least a couple of hours. Three if you bring children.
