Fun fact: Heather Donahue brought a knife with her when filming “The Blair Witch project” (1999) because she was afraid it might be a snuff film. All of her friends and family urged her not to work on it.

Has anyone considered that it could have been a mix of both? That is, Taylor agreed to certain parts of filming, like being tied up and certain other aspects, but was not told about other things the filmmakers were going to do, which is why in certain parts she's unbound and not panicked, and in others she's genuinely afraid. It wouldn't be the first time someone was lured into filming something that went in a completely different direction than they agreed to

I think the moral of the story is to always get a clear written consent form when filming horror movies outlining exactly what will take place and possible distressing scenes.

“I’m sure this will be seen years later, I’m sure we’ll all be dead”
Kinda freaky how after all this time later half of the people involved with this incident have passed

I feel like she was in on it until certain point. Once they took her out of the house she was scared bc she hadn't agreed to that part of it, and only went along bc who knows how they would've reacted if she fought back.

I find the whole myth of the "Blair Witch" so interesting. The movie having this myth around it where they made everyone believe the actors all died, the investigation aspect of it is so cool for a low budget horror movie.

I remember just how people talked about The Blair Witch Project back when this came out. The hype was huge and the impression that this was real due to the marketing was something people got caught up in. It’s very fascinating to look back on.

You just reminded me how good the marketing was for the Blair Witch Project, it’s no wonder why people back then thought it was real lost footage that was being showing off in movie theaters

Fun fact, the budget for Blair Witch was roughly estimated to be around 200K - 500K and given how the film is shot that still might be a generous estimate. Its gross net from theaters gathered in almost 250 Mil. A massive financial success.

I think the situation regarding Taylor’s consent in acting in the film might be a bit less black and white then “Taylor was willing” or Taylor was unwilling”. It seems to me personally, judging from moments such as the nose scratch and the fake throat slitting scenes that she was in on the act as an actress. however, as seen with the taped knife scene, there was a risk of her being put in danger, and it possible some of her fear and distressed reactions were genuine to some extent.
I think what happened was she did consent to being an actress in the film and had a vague idea of where the film was going. However, the filmmakers may have overstepped some boundaries and went too far with some of the threats and more intense scenes, causing some significant distress to Taylor in the process.

Why did five friends recruit a stranger instead of just having one of them play the role? All of this would've been avoided.

I think it was a mix of acting and real fear. perhaps they did tell her they were going to fake-kidnap her, but didn't tell her they were going to threaten her life, maybe for "authentic fear" or something.
like she knew the kidnapping wasn't real but when they started threatening her she actually started to panic, but by the end realised it was part of the ruse and went along with it.
idk im just trying to make sense of this

The thing that creeps me out about the blair witch is that to this day people make those little stick men and leave them all around the woods and they just fit in too well for that creepy atmosphere

Maybe she initially planned to go along with it, then in the moment got cold feet? Maybe it was different from what she expected or was told, and they did stuff she wasn't warned about? She also could have taken something like drugs or alcohol which made her compliant simply because she was high/drunk?

When one of the lawyers says that she should act angry instead of relieved after discovering it was a joke, idk man. If I had spent the last hours tied thinking I'm going to be killed and then they say it's a joke, I might be more inclined to play along instead of threatening them in the spot, knowing they can still kill me.

That is really weird and creepy that 3 of the 5 filmmakers died before reaching the age of 40.

Her being able to scratch her nose and acting like that fake throat slit killed her were huge red flags for me as far as believing her.

As everyone else here, I think Taylor simply wasn't informed about the extent of the things they were planing. She was preparing for being tied and getting a movie about being "kidnapped". The moment they take her out of the house, she begins to worry, when they begin threatening her with a knife she begins crying. Maybe when they finally reached the end, when she's "killed" she remembered that was a scene they told her about, and she's embarrassed at getting cold feet and tries to finish like nothing happened.

But I don't doubt that they traumatized her, because she genuinely believed she was in danger. So I think her thought process went more or less like this: She feels terrible after what happened, but tells herself it was just a film, it just got a little heavy, and she got scared. After all, nothing actually happened. Then the doctor begins asking about her bruises, maybe her family was also worried. And then she finally gets to watch the "film" and can see for herself that she wasn't overreacting, what they did *was* messed up, so she takes the tape as proof and goes to the police.

I'm not a doctor, but I will say that Taylor reminds me of a lot of the people I've known who were on the autism spectrum. What I know for certain is that she didn't have a lot of friends, and this group of people were being very welcoming, and she was excited about that. I saw in another video that another girl started hanging out with them before this, and they told her they were going to pretend to kidnap her and make a movie of it. She told them not to and started avoiding them. Given what I know about this case, I think it's pretty likely that they told Taylor what they were going to do, and she went along with it because she wanted to fit in with this group. I think it was a lot more intense and frightening than she expected, and her doctor and probably anyone else she told said she should take the tape to the police.

I think the deaths that followed are a mix of coincidence and sad truth. It sounds like Derek Faxlanger had epilepsy and it was expected to dramatically shorten his life. Jonathan and Travis, I'm sorry to say, very likely fell victim to the epidemic of suicide that plagues young men, particularly in rural communities. I think it might not be a coincidence that one of them died in 2014, the year the water crisis began. That made a lot of people lose hope entirely. From where I'm standing, it looks less mysterious and more sad.

Blair Witch still remains one of my favorite movies. I’ll never forget popping in the vhs of it back in 2010 or so and being convinced it was all real at the age of 7
