Singer Fashion Mate 237 Sewing Machine

I purchased this sewing machine for $7.50 on a facebook bidding site. It said it was in working condition, but apparently that's not quite true. My goal with this machine is to get an understanding of sewing machines by taking it apart. In this video my wife who is a master, tries to get it working but finds a problem.

NOTE: The Singer 237 threads from left to right (flat side of needle facing right). This is the opposite of many machines, so don't get confused.

There is a thread guide your missing at the needle, either you missed it or its missing . I just found this exact machine on the side of the road for scrap and it was from a smokers house but complete, so i brought it home and gave it a good bath and now rebuilding it, only need to replace the bobbin door, seems someone cracked the top .

The manual is readily available. The lever with the eye that pulls the tread up and down is called a take up lever.
When threading the hobbit case, hold open the latch when inserting it. Take the thread towards the back and book it at the top. Then use the upper needle to pull up the thread.

in the video it looked like she threaded the needle from right to left WRONG!!!
The needle threads from LEFT TO RIGHT and NOT RIGHT TO LEFT
Also make sure you have the needle in correctly:
The THREAD GROOVE (on the needle) SHOULD BE ON THE LEFT (FACING THE MACHINE) AND THE "HOOK SCARF" (THAT'S THE LITTLE HOLLOW THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE THREAD GROOVE THAT THE BASKET HOOK IN THE BOBBIN AREA PICKS UP THE THREAD AS IT OSCILLATES)
thread it correctly and it will work.

I thought I saw where she fed the needle from the inside out. I thought the thread had to be fed from left to right. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I think my tension is not adjusted correctly. Can you show how to adjust it?... It gets several threads on the underside from the bobbin thread.

I have watched the videos on the singer 237. Either I missed it or it was never mentioned, what size bobbin does it use.

Do you have anymore information on adjusting the tension on the top thread? (Luckily I bought mine installed into a small cabinet for $1.00 at a local auction.

Someone may have installed the wrong needle bar on your machine or done some kind of alteration of the original as this machine cannot feed properly with front to back needle/thread orientation.
