What's the biggest known structure in the universe? A recent study may have found the answer -- and the structure's very existence has puzzled scientists. Meet the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall (Her-CrB GW).

HuffPost Science invites you to join the discussion with top scientists covering the latest news in spaceflight, brain/body research, evolution, and the influence of science on culture.

"Here's this big thing. It's so big that we don't know why it's so big. It's so big that we can't tell you why it's so big. This thing is so big."

How about a hypothesis, or an explanation as to why/how it defies the laws of physics and which laws it violates?

How do you define a structure? Is the Earth a structure? Can you call the Earth and the Moon as one structure? How close two galaxies have to be near each other for scientists to call them one thing?

Wow. I'm the first comment after quarantine. As such, it appears fitting that i make a joke about the corona in the great wall. Like that would go viral.

it seems somehow unfair to use the phrase "biggest thing" when referring to a mega-galaxy.  by that logic, the Universe is the 'biggest thing' in the observable universe.

Yeah, ok. Might as well say the biggest object in the universe is the whole fucking universe...

Don't use "like" when you're discussing numbers. lol  It makes it sound inaccurate and just a plain guess.

Ya know it pretty cool to think that every second the wall at the edge of the observable universe proceeds hundreds of yet more mystery....

The answer is very simple. "Given the age of the universe", that is the key statement. I have always felt the the age of 13.5 billion years was wrong. I feel that it is far far older than that. It may be a billion times older than that stated age of 13.5 billion years.

I think there should be a law where someone can sue youtube video's, My brian got fried from trying to imagine how big that thing is.

2:00 wouldn't this area expand along with the universe at a rate faster than the speed of light?

You don't disqualify something as being one object just because its formed by multiple parts. Anyone would qualify a house as a single object even though its composed of multiple parts such as the walls, roof and foundation. Those quasars form a single massive object, and yes it can be officially defined as a single object even though its composed of multiple parts.

You lost me at "ginormous".  It is either "gigantic" or "enormous" but there is no such thing as "ginormous".

You know 1 light year is 10 trillion (10, 000, 000, 000, 000) kilometres. So that times 10 billion (10, 000, 000, 000) will be a lot more than 22 digits... Believe me...

It's so big it killed the big bang theory that says the Universe is about 13.7 billion years old. If you don't know the point of origin and where the Earth is in relationship to that point then there is no reason to guess the age of the Universe.

So it's just a cluster of stars, galaxies, whatever... It's not a single massive object? I was about to say...

"So massively ginormous that it shouldn't even exist" and thats not proof enough that the Big Bang isnt true?

13 or 14 billion of years for the age of the universe is too little. The rate of expansion of the universe is increasing right, so if you trace it back in time it will be much much slower rather than faster. No explosion or a bang a creation event can not be a bang. If you follow it through in the past the age of the universe will increase significantly.

1 Light Years is 6 trilion Miles, but i think the biggest things is "Eridanus Supervoid"

"It shouldn't even exist". I hate it when scientists assume that.
