There are certain things that help us to remember the ever-present beauty that is often forgotten as we grow older and get caught in the mire of lifeโ€™s complexities. In the poem, โ€œHe Remembers Forgotten Beauty,โ€ William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) speaks to the enduring presence of beauty that remains within us and is revealed to us when we experience wonderful things like love. (See below for the full text of the poem.) This resonates with me, as I find that literature, art, poetry, nature, and love help me to reconnect with that forgotten beauty when lifeโ€™s challenges cloud my mind. Whether through the escape of a beloved book, the awe inspired by art, the peace found in nature, or the sweetness of a moment of affection shared with a loved one, these things call forth to my mind the beauty that is always there, waiting to be rediscovered and appreciated, offering comfort and perspective when my heart is weary. The experience of love, above all else, reminds me that there are many beautiful things to be experienced in this life. ๐ŸŒน

When my arms wrap you round I press
My heart upon the loveliness
That has long faded from the world;
The jewelled crowns that kings have hurled
In shadowy pools, when armies fled;
The love-tales wrought with silken thread
By dreaming ladies upon cloth
That has made fat the murderous moth;
The roses that of old time were
Woven by ladies in their hair,
The dew-cold lilies ladies bore
Through many a sacred corridor
Where such grey clouds of incense rose
That only the godsโ€™ eyes did not close:
For that pale breast and lingering hand
Come from a more dream-heavy land,
A more dream-heavy hour than this;
And when you sigh from kiss to kiss
I hear white Beauty sighing, too,
For hours when all must fade like dew.
But flame on flame, and deep on deep,
Throne over throne where in half sleep,
Their swords upon their iron knees,
Brood her high lonely mysteries.

The glory of love is its capacity to endure change, to see in the greying hair and weakened body with wrinkles forming, the same one we loved and pledged ourself to before life did its work. People must change, people must age, people grow inwardly and evolve. But it is the love that remains and strengthens and deepens and endures. It is love that gives beauty to what is outwardly fading away. "As for man, he blossoms like a flower and his days are like the grass." But love endures.
