In the twin snakes, he actually can detect autofire.

Hideo Kojina mentioned in one of his earlier interviews about MGS, that they simply forgot to put that Feature in

Bro was bluffing just to mess with kids who used autofire

I always wondered what criteria he was looking for, because I had a particular PS1 controller back in the day that had the fastest turbo fire I had ever seen. I would do the torture sequences and snakes health would barely ever get below the full mark. If that didn't trigger an auto fire alert I don't know what would.

I don't remember who it was but I once watched a speedrun for one of the MGS games on AGDQ where one of the commentators mentioned that another speedrunner was able to tap the button fast enough for the game to think he was using auto-fire.

He got me when I tried to use a MadCatz for Twin Snakes ×-×

in Twin Snakes, he calls it "Turbo Button" and he will be able to sense it, then disables your ability to resist and if it's too early in the interrogation, you will die.

in the PS1 release, I feel like it was just a comment to psyche the player out

I can confirm that worked.
By using autofire, the energy bar just didn't reacted and it was like you wasn't pressing anything at all.
Still, you had few seconds, after the torture, when Snake was heavy breathing, to switch it on and recover some energy.

I remeber, having a turbo controller, and it would kill you. If you use the feature. but this was late 90's and I barely remeber this lol.

I know that you cant believe some guy on the internet unnecessarily, but the official "Autofire" option is in fact detectable. I remember my brother and I laughing about how cool it was that it knew, we were honestly shocked by all the 4th wall breaks back then. The very popular psycho mantis 4th controller slot thing had us baffled until we got our hands on a.. I think it was either PSX magazine or Playstation Magazine, where it told us the secret, everyone in my class was also stuck on that part for awhile.

Home computers were rarer back then as not everyone could afford it, so just "looking it up" wasnt exactly an option for most of us poor kids.

However i do remember getting the official autofire controller at Blockbuster and I really didnt want it because MadCatz controllers looked cooler, and the bragging rights of having a controller that ugly wasnt that appealing. The colorful see through plastic was the style and I WANTED IT!

He probably would never stop the torture session. Input might even stop working

On the ps1 he could detect that you was using it but I found out that if you press the button in a slower pace he wouldn't know

As someone who owned this game when it came out, I can confirm this is true

Sorry, but what do you mean with "nothing will happen?" I played it back at the time in the ps one with a turbo controller and IT DOES recognize. I really thought you were going to show the cutscene of it, when ocelot says "I TOLD YOU!! NO AUTOFIRE!!" turns the electricity in maximum power frying snake untill all his health is depleted and it's Game Over.

When you use the full auto button feature for this game on code breaker or game shark he knows.

What you're actually describing is turbo fire. Having to hold the button down is turbo. Auto fire means you don't even have to hold the button down and the input for that button is repeatedly triggered without any input from the controller. So maybe turbo fire works because there is still some kind of manual input from the controller and maybe auto fire doesn't work because there's no manual input from the controller.

Think of shoot 'em up games. Press the shoot button once and it fires once, hold it down and it shoots rapidly like turbo fire is activated, auto fire would make you constantly shoot without pressing the shoot button.

The anti autofire thing worked against my controllers I had back then.

Those auto-fire controllers existed _way_ before the PS1 and Nintendo themselves included the feature on their NES Advantage arcade stick.

I was the envy of all my friends for having one.

I can only imagine some people at Konami having tested lots of different third-party controllers with turbo functionality on PS1 development debug/test consoles (blue PS1 consoles) running a demo app that logged controller inputs and later running development builds of Metal Gear Solid with preloaded save files or a scene jumper to test whether their auto-detection code worked.

it isn't only PS1 I had a PS2 Controller that achieved the detection and Ocelot will Reprimand you and Will Kill Snake as Punishment for using it was a fucking pain actually I think it might be he kills Meryl and triggers a game over because of it
