As a Scot, I feel that I should tell you that clotted cream and jam are traditional Devonshire and Cornish accoutrements (hence the fact that the jam or clotted cream first options are named after the two counties) and while they are the preferred topping for most on a plain or fruit (generally sultanas) scone, essentially you can put whatever you want on one, or whatever you feel will complement it best and for many the topping of choice is just regular butter.

In Ireland it’s most common to serve scones with butter and jam so nut butter isn’t too far a leap! These remind me a bit of a soda bread my mom makes called sweet loaf- you’d just add a few more spices like nutmeg, allspice, clove etc and use raisins and sultanas instead of the chocolate and caramel chips. Great toasted with butter!
