As an end-of year reward to my second grade classes, I showed "Cats" (the DVD) and "Lord of the Dance" (the DVD with Michael Flatley). First, I read Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats to them--a poem a day until I showed the DVD. They were giggly at first, when the cats were cavorting about in "The Jellicle Ball". Afterward, we had a discussion about who Andrew Lloyd Weber and T. S. Eliot were; that people could actually earn a living acting, singing, and dancing on Broadway as well as the jobs that were behind the scenes. It was adorable to watch them on the playground fterward trying to mimic the cats and the Irish dancers. I also sent home flyers from the County informing the parents of the summer dance programs available.

I like the credit Paul gives to Gillian Lynne.

great great show! that said, maybe it's because i saw the first one so many years ago, but it did not have the same magic for me this time around. i didn't really feel or see anything new. though she was okay, the new grizabella was in no way as powerful or as memorable as betty buckley. her rendition of memory is to me the cruz version of this broadway classic, and i believe part of the reason, the show had the legs it did first time. the singer was no where close to that, no emotion at all. not to say she can not sing, just not as good as betty! beautifully staged and costumed, it is a spectacle for sure, but for the first timers who see it again, you will know what i am talking about.
