Ans: ( x+3) (X-4)= -12 Just get factors of -12 . +4 and -3 =-12 and +1x in the centre. Solved it in my head ( ex Maths teacher -retired). Listing the factors of -12 is a good way to star when learning trinomial equations and early Algebra.

I generally found the biggest issue with factoring is the lack of basic multiplication tables. Without solid understanding of the basics it effects the more advanced mathematics.

This isn't really a hack, it's just the way a person would do it mentally, without all the writing and going through all the steps. "What two numbers multiply together to get 12 and add or subtract to get 1?" Then you figure out the signs.
Though I acknowledge how beginners might need the procedure you showed. The only disadvantage is the time that it takes. That's always a factor on tests.
