"Ukraine has long since the start of the war, claimed that it needs to have the capability to strike legitimately legitimate military targets deep inside Russia, military bases where those long range missiles that are destroying Kharkiv, another Ukrainian cities are."

Western deterrence and red lines from Beijing have stopped Putin from retaliating over Ukraine's use of Western weapons on attack sites in Russia, Michael Bociurkiv tells Frontline on #timesradio

As Sarah Paine (from the US Naval war college) says, anyone who thinks sanctions don't work, should take a look at North Korea, that is the long run of sanctions just losing 2% annualy over time. North Korea was the richer part of the country back before the war. Russia is ultimately headed to North Korea status. Also let Ukraine keep hitting the refineries and then see how the economy goes.

Other military channels have explained the Ukrainian defenses were built away from the border kilometers inland. Construction equipment and personnel would not survive Russian attacks if they got closer to the front. This is why Russians just crossed over the border, but have now been stopped.

Excellent interviewing as ever by Kate Gerbeau, and a moving and informative account from another well-chosen interviewee.

Great interview, thanks. Almost every single thing he said is stuff I've been saying to anyone who would listen (and very few do want to listen) for two freaking years now.

An excellent guest, well informed making important points with the heartbroken but not hopeless (somehow!) humanity that is missing from some of the other analysts we see (who lack empathy, making them sometimes hypocritical.) It gives me momentary relief to see my own outrage and frustration reflected in someone who can articulate these unbearable feelings calmly. Thank you.

You always forget mentioning the role of Turkey in evading the Western sanctions, in many different ways.

Excellent interview. This analyst spent time on an aspect of war that doesn’t get much attention - the long term impact on society and culture. All those children without parents spirited to Russia. All those families with lost men. Unthinkable!

The argument that a small % of US military budget has destroyed a large amount of Russian armour: Significantly more than half of all support for Ukraine was not given by the US. Some countries have given more than 100% of their annual defence budgets. So yes, the US is getting a cheap win, but it's not because the war is cheap, it's because others are paying!

Why does it take so long for Western leaders to deal with autocrats like Putin. Will they ever learn that it's only strength that autocrats back down from? Is it now too late for Ukraine?

Compared to other lame talking heads appearing on Times Radio this guy speaks clearly and intelligently.
