Washington D.C. wants to be the 51st state. And while opponents raise a lot of arguments against the idea, most of them don’t make much sense.

So we just gonna forget about Puerto Rico, Guam, and Samoa

I will only support DC statehood if we simultaneously combine the Dakota’s because 50 is a nice number.

Why don’t you go over the constitutional argument for why DC is not a state and is instead governed by congress? I think the Supreme Court would reject that bill even if the senate approved it. Also why don’t you mention that the democrats and republicans together just voted on expanding the power of the capitol police to have offices in all 50 states.

Not only DC but Puerto Rico and Guam as well

100% serious here, Biden should reverse course on all his policies, express desire to do the opposite. I'm sure Gop would oppose him.

Please prefer retrocession to Maryland > D.C. Statehood.

D.C, — which is already smaller than most other states — lacks the ability to grow at pace with the rest of the country. 100% of its land is developed to the set architectural height limit. Thus, incorporating D.C. as a state would constitute a further erosion of voting parity in the United States. You would have made 700, 000 people responsible for electing two senators and a congressmen, creating in effect a second Wyoming— one in which the discrepancy between representation and population would be irrevocable, and deliberate.

Each D.C. residents would have more than 3 times the political power of a voter in a big state like Texas, or California.

Besides, where would you fit all of the state infrastructure in a city already bursting at the seams? Where would you seat the legislature, and the governor? Why else, besides political representation, does D.C. need to become its own discreet state? It doesn't need to coordinate disaster relief across vast tracts of land, or manage sweeping forests, or do anything else that a geographically diverse, proper state government is needed to do. It is a city, and a city it will stay for the forceable future.

I see no reason to believe that statehood for D.C. is more efficient than ceeding the residential and commercial areas of D.C. to Maryland for the purposes of political representation while keeping the federal D.C. intact in pockets around federal infrastructure for the sake of the separation of powers.

There is something wrong here, in the Congress invasion DC still wouldn't be able to call the national guard because Congress itself will always be federal land, Statehood or not.

The four richest counties in America are located around DC, and DC is the only real estate market that didn’t decline in value in the 2008 financial crisis. It’s not a surprise most of the problems in this country can be traced to how out of touch the politicians and bureaucrats are in and around DC, and making DC a state will only make it easier for them to ignore the plights of the average American

The District of Columbia's creation is rooted in Article I, section 8, clause 17 of the Constitution, which says that the “Seat of the Government of the United States” shall be a district that is at most ten square miles and separate and apart from the other “particular States.”

Make Puerto Rico a state as well. Then that’s two new states so we keep an even number. Or while we’re at it make the other US territories states. Guam, Virgin Islands, Mariana Islands, and Samoa.

Republicans sure like telling people what to do for a group that screams so much about their own freedoms.

Don't pay taxes as a DC resident, and take it to the Supreme Court.

You have to ask yourself. If Republicans wanted this, would you be so agreeable. And I’m pretty sure I know the answer to that

Reagan National is right across the river from DC. The airspace in DC is highly restricted.

If DC were to become the 51st state, where would the state capital be? Across the road from the federal capital? Who would have the final say? The mayor or the governor? I will never support DC becoming the 51st state. We can talk about making it the 52nd or 53rd all day, but to suggest DC should become a state before Puerto Rico is completely ass-backwards.

You have to laugh to keep from crying at the obvious truth that there is a certain demography within this country that has a big problem with sharing political power.

Its the federal governments domain. If you don't like it don't live their. Its way to pricey anyway.

I was born in the Georgetown University Hospital in DC and lived in Fairfax County VA my whole life. In school when I’ve heard from my peers that they were born in Virginia or any 49 of the other states I got jealous of the fact that they were born in an actual state and I wasn’t.

I have wanted it to become a state but this video made me realize that this is not a good idea. If DC won’t become a state or part of Maryland I don’t mind it being part of Virginia
