Here’s why Claude Frollo is Evil

Disney’s portrayal of villains has long informed our shared conception of evil — especially Darth Vader from Star Wars, Scar from The Lion King, and Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Through their behaviors and personality traits, they demonstrate what we should look to avoid when choosing leaders, as evidenced by their similarities to the 20th century’s most brutal dictators.

But might their portrayal also highlight the traits we should expect from heroes? Might they suggest how we can become heroes ourselves?

Note that in the first sentence of the song, Hellfire:

In the first sentence, he says, "Of my virtue I am justly proud."

When you think about it, that's an amazing contradiction because a Christian virtue is humility. This speaks much of how Frollo sees himself, his God complex.

The worst part is that there have been, are and will be countless people in real life who are like him.

That’s why Frollo is one of the scariest Disney villains: he’s so real. No powrrs, no special abilities. He’s just an extremely religious, racist traditionalist with a lot of power who is confused why he feels attraction to something he hates. His beliefs are challenged and he fights it.

EDIT: he’s a Middle Ages type of religious, which was much more extreme.

He was supposed to be a "holy man" but he let pride, wrath, and lust control him

Funny thing is, he brought it all on himself. He could have realised his humanity at any point, but no.
His pride and lust were his downfall.
Ironic.

Frollo is one of the most human villain. He represents the darkness that some people have, and they truly believe that they are doing the right thing or that they are good people.

This is coming from a follower of Christ, what makes Frollo so twisted is his overwhelming sense of pride. It isnt just his resistance to change, it's his resistance to even simply repent.
He doesnt realize that just like every other human on planet earth, he is also born into sin

A character people tend to overlook aside from the intro is the Archdeacon of Notre Dame, who is the polar opposite of Frollo, even in his color scheme. Frollo approaches Esmerelda with bitter hatred that is fueled by primarily lust, but the Archdeacon immediately jumped to her defense in the movie when Frollo asked Feebus to drag her outside the church, and he treated her with kindness and welcoming and even suggested her to turn to God for help.

Frollo thought he could just get rid of sinful individuals with bloodshed when that is not how that works. The Archdeacon's approach, showing people the error of their ways, helping people and being kind to those who oppose you and helping people turn to Christ is how one can truly turn people away from sin.

that’s why he such a great villain bc of how realistic he is. There are actually many people out there who use christianity and their religion to spread hate when their religion tells them to spread love to everyone.

Some of the most horrifying things were committed people who believed what they were doing was right.

I used to be a queer witch but this isn't through a beating that I turned to God. It was through the care of my mother who led me to Christ. At first I felt insecure in my sins. Then I realised I was just human, I could repent and invite God to change me in the name of Jesus. That's how you are supposed to save people. What Frollo did actually made people die before meeting Christ. He himself talks about virtue and morals when he himself has never met him.

I think frollo would be an interesting character for an origin story. I wanna know what made him this way.

He was the most horrifying disney villain for me. And he doesn't even have powers!

Idk why, but his face alone sends shivers to my spine.

In Hellfire, he asks Maria to "protect him" etc. and guess what? He gets his wish. Esmeralda disappears. The source of his temptation is gone. And what does Frollo do? He throws a hissy fit, because that wasn't the answer he *really* wanted

I saw someone comment another thing that distinguishes Frollo from other Disney villains: he doesn't see himself as a bad person. Villains like Scar, Ursula, Captain Hook and so on know they are villains. They know what they is wrong, but don't care about it. Frollo, on the other hand, really believes to be a good man, and really believes to be following his religion's teachings. Even when he is about to commit murder against yet another gypsy, he quotes the Holy Bible...

In Disney they'll never make anything like the 90's film, now them don't have the guts to telling real story

In the book Frollo isn't really the bad guy.

Frollo actually willing adopted Quasimoto because he remninded him so much of his own little brother. Quaszimoto's mother abandoned him

He is the embodiment of almost every sin. He refuses to conquer himself therefore he must perish. The Buddhists say that the cause of suffering is desire....and we see that so plainly with Frollo.

I don't care what y'all say. Frollo, Gothel and Lady Tremaine are the mosf evil and dangerous Disney villains to ever exist. They can be found literally anywhere in the world.
