06:32 Is 10,000 steps a day considered a good workout for weight loss?

How Many Steps Do I Take In A Day?
I would say, on average, I get at least 10,000 steps in a day.

How To Walk 10,00 Steps A Day
I track my daily steps with my Apple Watch. I decided that I needed to get more activity in my life, so I made it a priority to get back to walking 10,000 steps a day.

Your steps will also quickly add up by moving as much as possible from:
- Doing house work
- Mowing your lawn and doing other yard work
- Taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator
- Take brisk walks in the morning before work to improve your mood
- Go for another brisk walk during your lunch break to improve your focus
- After you get home from work go for a walk to clear your mind, lower stress, and start relaxation mode
- Another one of the best ways to get outside and walk more is to rescue a dog.

How Long Does It Take To Walk 10,000 Steps?
In approximately 54 minutes, I walked 6,388 steps, which equaled 3.36 miles, and burned 292 calories.

6,388 steps / 54 minutes
= approximately 118 steps per minute

Based on these calculations, for me to get 10,000 steps a day at my brisk walking speed, it would take:
10,000 steps / 118 steps per minute
= 85 minutes of brisk walking to reach 10,000 steps in a day.

How Many Miles Is 10,000 Steps?
6,388 steps / 3.36 miles
= 1901 steps per mile

10,000 steps / 1901 steps per mile
= 5.26 miles to walk 10,000 steps in a day

If 10,000 steps at one time seems like a lot, take more frequent, shorter walks throughout the day.

1,000 steps / 118 steps per minute
= approximately 8.5 minutes

Take two 30 minute walks, one in the morning and one at night, then one to two 10 minute walks after meals.

By getting into the habit of taking shorter walks and staying more active throughout the day, it will easily put you over 10,000 steps for the day.

How Many Calories Is 10,000 Steps?
The answer to the question of how many calories is 10,000 steps will be different for everyone.

However, here are my calculations:
- In 54 minutes, I walked 6,388 steps and burned 292 calories
- 6,388 steps / 292 calories = approximately 22 steps to burn 1 calorie
- 10,000 steps / 22 steps = approximately 455 calories

Is Walking 10,000 Steps Considered A Good Workout For Weight Loss?
If you are currently living a sedentary lifestyle and are obese, walking 10,000 steps a day is an excellent way to start losing weight.

Walking 10,000 steps a day may also:
- Lower bad cholesterol
- Improve brain health by lowering inflammation associated with cognitive decline
- Improve mental health
- Reduce stress

However, for the best sustainable weight loss results, you should also be focusing on strength training to builds lean muscle, to increase your metabolism.

QOTD: On average, how many steps do you think you take in a day?

My wife who at one point was in a wheelchair for 3 years following a car accident, and also had knee surgery, is up to 19, 520, 000 steps after 6.5 years of walking and she uses walking poles for her balance and is not young, and we live where there is a brutally cold winter. Steps can add up, and this is why it works. The most important thing to do is to ESTABLISH THE HABIT OF DAILY WALKING. It doesn't need to be 10, 000 steps, but the habit is more important than the amount, and it will add up.

I'm an older woman who is now up to 9500 deliberate steps in one session daily. It takes me about 1 hr and 15 -20 minutes. I started at 2500 steps and worked my way up. I will be at 10, 000 real soon.

This video is surprisingly accurate. For me I don't have the time to do extra walking during the day so I do the 10, 000 steps early in the morning which takes me about 85-90 minutes of walking.

If you’re just starting out, take it easy at first, go slow. This is not a race, you don’t want to race-walk and end up with sore knees. The steps add up during the day as you deal with chores and errands as well as dedicated walks. A step counter is important; I was amazed at how fast they added up.

I use the step counter you link to. It's been great and very sturdy.

Cool video. I was struggling to get my 10k steps in when I'm out, so I bought a walking treadmill and put it infront of the tv. Very easy to get the steps in now, one half hour tv show boosts them up loads and is easy to get through.

I walk 2 hours everyday and it ends up being between 12k and 14k steps and between 6 and 8 miles. I walk in the morning every day. It's a great start to my day and it's my "me" time.

My walks are very strenuous because I live in a hilly area. So its constant uphill and downhill, rinse and repeat. So by the time I'm done w my 2 hour hour walk, I'm drenched in sweat from head to toe. Such a good workout and so easy too.

I have found for myself that walking 10, 000 plus steps a day is the ONLY way managed my weight ( along with diet and isolated workout time which a long walk could accomplish). When I wanted to lose weight, my minimum was 12000 to 15000 a day. And as someone who has alot of body trauma, I encourage walking too.

in my last rotation as a nursing student (usually called consolidation) you pretty much take on the regular caseload/work as a fully trained nurse... steps per day were between 14000--> 18000; and on days off I had about 2000. bear in mind the work schedule for that was 4 days on 4 days off - so I really yoyoed.

I love that you promoted adopting an animal. I always say what you said. "Save a life!" Thank you for this informative video.
The steps things drove me crazy sometimes. Cause I'd kill it with weights, but only hit 7, 000 or so steps. Unless I also was doing cardio.
QTD: my daily steps fluctuates regularly. I usually hit 10, 000, but some days it's almost 20, 000 or over. On some days when I don't have to work, it may only hit 8, 000. But those days are rare.

I have always wanted to know the answers to these questions! Thank you :) my step count varies on the day, but id say I average about 7, 000 to 8, 000 a day. Idefinitely have to make the effort to get these steps because I work at a desk all day.

Great video. I try to get 8k steps a day and it often ends up being 10k at the end of the day. On top of that I lift 3 days a week Push/Pull/Legs more hypertrophy focused. Seems like a good combo to get lean.

Great video. I do about 10000 to 13000 steps in a day. I also do strength training. Right now I am at 189lbs and 5'9". My wife does about 20000 to 25000, but has a hard time losing weight, but doesn't do strength training. So I totally believe that strength training is very important in daily training.

I think walking 5000 steps every second day is not bad at all for my age, i'm 62. I still work and lift weights at the gym 3-4 times a week also. Honestly 10000 steps is a bit to much for me, hey we are talking about 2 hours of walk here, ok it's great but my goodness not every day!
