Remembering Nikki Giovanni | A Legacy of Poetry

This week Reshaping Culture highlights the life and legacy of Nikki Giovanni, one of poetry’s most revered and respected poets who influenced the culture of poetry. Her contribution to the poetic space will forever live within our hearts and minds.

A Poem of Friendship

for the thoughts we share
but the words we never have
to speak

As a woman, her position is an impossible position for a man. She was coy and charming but she was a feminist. Back then feminist were typically lesbian. It turns out so was she. But, she was also arguing with a gay man who himself had no interest in women. I think the argument would have been better supported had she given him her true feelings about men. Something tells me she was abused.
