Given how radically different Warrel's vocal style has been since the 1990s and the fact that he suffered a vocal injury while on tour with Sanctuary in the late 80s that makes it difficult for him to sing high, this was actually a very impressive performance. It's extremely difficult for a natural bass to hit notes that high, even a baritone for that matter, and considering how lousy James Hetfield's vocals have been for the past 20 years in the live venue, definite kudos for this band to not shy away from the older material.

This is why I respect those bands with high pitch vocals, you sacrifice your voice for so long... at the end it burns out.  It's a beautiful and noble sacrifice!

Stop bitching about Dane's vocals. He was in his 20's when he recorded Refuge Denied and Into the Mirror Black. He's 53 now! At least he can still hit those high notes. How many other singers his age can you think of that can still do that? And do it live, not just in a studio with lots of fancy pro tools? He still has a great, extremely unique voice! Give the man a break.

When I first saw the album cover for Refuge Denied, I was like what is this? So I bought the album and instantly loved it. One of my favorite bands to this day.

He is my idol of singers! Trained my vocals to be just like his! And just like him my voice was gone from all the strain I put on it! Rest in peace vocal god

Say what you want about Warrel's voice... considering that he can hit those notes as high as he can (granted not as high as the studio album) 25 years later is pretty fuckin' good.

dude, he's killing it. Of course it's painful- that's high as fuck and he's a bass baritone in his 40s- but he's still nailing it

I'm impressed with Dane's voice. I figured its been degrading over the years and when I heard he was reforming Sanctuary, I was in serious doubt he could even approach that stuff. For his age, that's pretty fucking impressive.

Some of this is age, but most of it has to do with simply not keeping his upper range in shape for over seventeen years (he didn't need it that much in Nevermore) and especially all of the drinking. Chris Cornell is another example of this same issue. Age is a factor, but as Laith already mentioned, there are other vocalists older who still sound phenomenal (Harry for example is almost ten years older and still sounds damn amazing).

My main point is the dude is trying and managing to get it up there- is it as good as back in the day? No. But personally i don't think it is really that bad and either way instead of ripping him apart like most people seem to be doing give the man a bit of credit for doing it and trying to power through it- either way over time him reaching up there for those notes will hopefully improve now that he's got a long while to get back in shape. Warrel's a champ, as i know you'd agree, he can do it.
